Question Cam shaft verification?

OK got the cam in the mail today from Larry's Performance. I ordered a Crane 343941 grind as they stated they grind their own cams. Long story short I was a little concerned they were blowing wind. I decided to measure the cam specs after realizing the cam butt has the marks CRANE BLAZER 292-2H. Grabbed the caliper and measured the base lobe at 1.457 and the Egg's head at 1.776 for a gross of .319 lift ? WTF? measured the first three lobes for a better look and coming up with similar #'s .317 The 343941 cam has a .533/.563 lift
This cam isnt even up to stock .401 so ???? If it even fits the application ??

Am I doing this all wrong ? "Please tell me yes" I looked up the H-292-2 on Cranecams.com and found it lists as a 70-82 Cleveland cam 524551 Not even an FE cam ?/ what gives? Any input here will be truly appreciated

Well, that seems about right. you also have to add the rocker arm ratio, .319x 1.76(a rocker arm ratio)=0.561. Pretty close. That is the lift at the valve. The .533/.563 numbers on the specs is valve lift, not lobe lift. Hope this helps!

I was really hoping for some more feedback here, if the above statement (which makes sense) is correct.

Then the stock 390/4v cam with .401
Egg=1.767" - Base=1.539" = @cam .228" x rocker 1.76" = @ valve .40128"

Reground 292-2H
Egg=1.777" - Base=1.474" = @cam .303" x rocker 1.76" = @ valve .53328"

the other lobes are about .313-.317 = .55792 at best

What I am noticing s these #s are coming off a smaller base lobe diameter
1.539-1.474=.065" ?? understanding the dynamics of the whole thing is a little puzzling. I guess my biggest concern is that the cam was not an FE cam to begin with according to Cranes online data. And with the #2 & #5 journals have a groove in them that kinda bothers me as no FE cam I have pulled to date has these grooves.

Anybody???????????

I showed it to John and he confirmed it was fine visually but didn't have time to place it on the blocks and confirm all the data. I grabbed a dial indicator with flex arm and will attempt to get a final reading on it later this week. Glenn also chimed in with an ok on the grooved journals and a link to some helpful reading.

In my guesstimation they achieved the lift requirements by removing from the base lobe. I'm just wondering if the timing events are (all) up to spec or do I simply have a cam with matched lift/lobe sep/dur #'s. They have a decent history from what I have seen so we'll hope for the best. Got to get the mic/blocks/wheel out and get to the bottom of it... on the upside I'm learning thats for sure

Well Bobby dont get freaked out when you put a degree wheel on it and the cam is off.... I personally have seen new cams as far as 6* off right out of the box...Thats why I'am a firm believer in adjustable Timing sets....

But if you figure out how far your off before the install, your way ahead of the game... So did you go with a Hydraulic cam on this build....I havent been here much lately..as I getting stuff together for a build this summer with the Grandson...He'll be with me over the summer and I got him a job fueling the boats at the lake..to help with some build money!! Yeah right!! Pump gas and Look at Pu$$y and party for $8hr..

What a job for a 16 year old... where do I sign up!!! I'd do it for free!! LOL

what are they thinking they could hire good looking chicks to pump the gas in bikinis and charge 10.00 gal LMAO!!

Yeah this is just the 390 to replace the 352 in the 66 so it's just a 343941 crane grind. Cast slugs, home ported heads (best part of the build-I hope) OEM adj rockers "if the non adj have any issues getting preload dialed in) port matched cast intake, and a 4160 holley (likely the donor from the 352 LOL//... budget build 101

You need to remember that the non-adjustable rockers are 1.73 but cam makers always list the adjustable rocker ratio of 1.76.
