5" Downpipe? From what i understand thats virtually impossible with the 7.3 becuase the 5" downpipe would be to large to fit. Got a link? Id like to see it

I can't see a 5" fitting, they would have to do a lot better bending job than MBRP does
the 4" barely misses the manifold/up-pipe flange then again at the cross member

What is the size of the exhaust where the downpipe connects? If it is 4", that is what you have is a 4" exhaust no matter what size pipe you use for the rest of the system. It can only flow as much as what the smallest opening in the system no matter what size you connect to it. A very simple experiment with water will prove to any doubters beyond anything else you may try. We tried this with header's and collector sizes back in my racing days. Learned a lifelong lesson that day.

think I remember the turbo outlet is 3 1/2 and probly a mandrel bent 3 1/2 pipe would be plenty
the stock down pipe reduces down to I think 2 5/8 in some places

Thank you, thank you. You could put a 10" turbo back system in and still only flow what a 4" does just fine. What's the purpose of struggling with a 5" down pipe, just so you can post it here that some way or another you crammed it in there?

Ray, when I took my original exhaust off the turbo the down pipe steped down from the flange and the new 4" was not steped down to 3 1/2". I thought the outlet was 4" but I didn't measure it.

I looked at mine very closely. It was 4" the entire way. I was surprised to see that the stock is reduced to 2 5/8 at some point. No wonder the 4" makes so much difference.

been quite a while since I done mine and don't remember all the measurements, but the turbo flange on mine is smaller than the pipe

I do remember my 3306s had 4" turbo outlets and the were bigger

Talking

If any one is interested I just got done installing a 5" system I purchased from ShopDiesel.com. Ordered system on Thursday and recieved it the next day with UPS ground. Total cost of system was $315 shipped to my door. Very high quaity 16 guage aluminized steel. Installation was a breeze but agree it would have been nice to have 1 more set of hands to install downpipe. Was 4" downpipe. Also went with muffler replacement pipe.

Who's got a turbo sitting on a bench? Let's measure the ID of the outlet and put an end to this speculation.

I believe it's something like 3.625 off hand.

There ya go, proof in the puddin', it don't matter what size tubing you may choose to run, you have a 3 5/8 inch exhaust. Period.

Why stop at the ID of the turbo outlet? How big are the exhaust valves? Or the ID of the exhaust manifold? I thought the name of the game was all about reducing exhaust flow restriction. Mufflers, cats, even turbo's themselves are restrictions. I would be interested if you have some links that explain (maybe with pictures for me) why the down pipe diameter cancels the diameter of the rest of the exhaust system? A 5" must flow better than a 4" even with the universal 4" down pipe because there is less restriction overall. Granted, most on this board running stock or slightly better may never flow enough exhaust to gain any benefit, but I have seen plenty of posts about going to 5" exhaust once you reach 500 hp+ because 5" flows more. Is that not true? Thanks for any help.
