AOD tranny question

Hey folks , I took my 48 out for it's first real spin on the open road last night. I did some work on the carb last month ,and might have messed up something that the throttle operates on the tranny. I have a cable going to my carb to operate the tranny shifting mechanism. Lats night ,I noticed that everything is cool except right around45 to 50 . She doesn't know whether to be in drive or overdrive. Now , I know it should be in drive at that speed. So, how do I adjust it ? Do I just let some cable out then test drive. Does anyone know whether if you shorten the cable ,what effect does it have on the tranny?? Thanks

Maybe I can help you out here. I am a Ford trans tech and have worked on a lot of these. The problem you describe does sound like a cable adjustment problem. I would let the cable out but only a little, then test drive it and see what it does. The "proper way" is to adjust it with a pressure gauge but most transmission guys do it by feel. A small adjustment goes a long way on this. Make sure the trans shifts at normal intervals and has a firm shift in all gears when under medium throttle. If ok there make sure the shift is firm under heavy throttle. If the TV pressure is too low (cable too long) it can smoke the trans really quick. A rule of thumb is a shift into O/D at around 55-60 under light to light medium/steady throttle, and then a forced downshift when put to the floor. When you do your road test, pay closest attention to the 2-3 and 3-4 shift. The two clutch packs used in 3rd and 4th are the most prone to burning up when the TV cable/rod adjustment in too light. If the shift seems "lazy" shorten your cable some. I hope this helps. I'll be happy to help more if needed.

It seems that since I removed the carb for some work, then reinstalled it , it now just kind of falls into each gear. I haven't driven it much since because of snow and other crappy weather conditions. Before it shifted rather stout, and went into od really well. Now it seems to shift kind of lazy, then falls into od at 40. Knowing this , you think I need to shorten or extend the tv cable.?? Thanks

Here are some links I was sent to do some adjustments, maybe they will help. Don't remember much about doing them, my "rememberer" is getting old but I haven't heard any complaints after the adjustment several years ago.

I can tell you for sure that if you are using a Lokar cable set up it may not be pulling the lever all the way back. My experience was that using a pressure gauge made it all clear and easily adjusted by a hobbiest like me.

Hey Joe Gaddy!! Is your 302 fuel-injected or carb??
I take it you connected a pressure gauge and made your adjustment?
I plan on using the lokar on a 5.8 fuel-inj,just about at that point.
What problem specificly?

You may want to take it to a trans shop so they can connect a pressure gage to the trans then adjust the lokar cable. I had mine done by a friend who is a retired Ford mechanic and it took about twenty min from start to finish.

If the pressure isn't right you can count on a rebuild trans in your future.

Carb on my 302 mertz. The Lokar spring was not stout enough to pull the lever all the way back. I could not figure that out untill I hooked up the pressure gauge. I don't think you will need Loakar with FI will you?

Joe Thank's! for the info ..I do fully expect to use a throttle-press/kickdown cable.

Actually no, not yet. I have been working all weekend. It seems that everyone wants their bikes custom painted at the same time. I'm not gonna complain. But it sure makes for a long work week.

I have the same trans in the mustang and anytime something changes (ie carbutetor) ect. you should recheck the tension and psi. other than the throttle location and trans PSI you must also have the correct geometry of the linkage meaning WOT and full tension on the TV cable arm but dont have the TV cable arm under so much tension that it jambs the valve in the trans. I am not a trans guy but I have learned alot about it from past mistakes. If I can help you some how let me know and i'll give you my cell #.

Not to hijack this thread, but I modified my kickdown linkage now my throttle cable is restricted in movement. Do you think this is just a geometry problem with my bracket or do you think I need to pull my pan an adjust from inside? I have a picture of my kickdown linkage but not able to attach til I get home.

Hey rdemilt, I adjusted my cable last night ,and man what a difference. Now it snaps into gear, and is not a lazy shift like it was the other evening.I'm pretty sure I didn't hurt it the other evening because I only drove through our community and back. Maybe about 15 miles. Now it shifts like it did when I bought the truck. Now when I go up a hill, it goes into a lower gear like it should . Before it would just lug up the hill. Thanks for the advice,.Maybe I can help you out sometime. cool
