So I was doing a final run through with my newly purchased 93 f-150 with 2wd, 5.0 v8 and the I beam front suspension. I was looking underneath and I saw that behind each front tire, about a foot back, there is a tube leading back (the point of origin appears to be the tire area) the tube/rod is "attached" to a small piece of metal that is mounted to the frame (there is a bushing on this rod as well at the piece attached to the frame). This piece of metal is coming apart...I mean it, it is flaking away, and it could give way any time it looks like. I have only a small clue what this piece is called, so I cant get a new one. I think that it is called like a Steering Gear? I need to know what this is called so that I can order a new one from the squealorship. I know that this is a horrible way to ask, but does anyone know what this is called? I cannot drive it until I get this piece fixed Thanks, I appreciate it.
Off of the description you've given, I'd venture to guess you're talking about a swaybar (anti-roll bar). This isn't a critical piece of hardware on your truck, more of a "it makes your truck handle better while cornering" kind of thing. If it's the swaybar that we're talking about here, I've seen a lot of them "flaking apart" before, and it doesn't really hurt it any. The front ones on my '85 are doing that, but I'm not too concerned with it.
Pictures would help identify if this is what you're talking about better, though... Just off of the description, I could think of a couple other things it could be. One of them being a brake line... which I really hope it isn't. By "a foot back" do you mean towards the back of the truck, or a foot back from the wheel (towards the center of the truck)?
It's probably not too hard. Drill out the rivets and bolt a new bracket on the frame in its place. Be sure to use grade 8 bolts - you don't want that thing falling off while driving down the road...
I started to reply to this yesterday, but I was laughing so hard I could not type.
Hello Bigshameshame1 Nice to meet you.
Please purchase a manual or go the the library and borrow one. Identify the parts in question so you can use the correct name instead of being like my wife and "the thingy that hooks on the other thingy"
For seeking help and advice, using the correct name, and taking CLEAR, INFOCUS, pictures is the best way to get meaningful answers. Otherswise we might as well say just replace the thingy, not the top one, but the bottom thingy.
Ya have to use a special thingy to get it off.
Good luck Frank
Yeah, the reason I thought he meant the swaybar was because the powdercoating is coming (or has come off) all my vehicle's swaybars, but the rest of my undercarriages look ok.
I was just under my truck today(oil change) and found the drivers side bracket rotted all to heck--lucky for me it is bolted on now---makes me wonder if it had been changed before---good time to replace the radius arm bushings too--look pretty crappy.I couldn't really see the rot holes until I pulled all the flaking undercoating off--glad I don't do the off-road thing--I would be broke somewhere !!!
