went to the dealership to have my oil changed after work the other day, it was too cold for me to do it, and while i was there i said go ahead and change the fuel filter as well. well he comes back after some time and says the oil change and filter were done, but the fuel filter was aftermarket and they couldnt change it???? this was on the truck when i bought it so i have no clue about it. what does stock one look like? mine is a about 4 or so inches in diameter (a guess) with a spot in the middle to loosen it with what looks like a big (very big) star socket. im wondering if the top may be different for some reason but the filter still be factory?? i have no idea here but i need to change it. thanx guys.
Yep. there are two different types of filters. 1) that is just the filter and uses the standard rubber cap and 2) is a filter with a built in cap ontop to replace the rubber one that came with your truck.
I forget the name of the a/m fuel filter, but is looks as you discribe. The factory filter comes without the top. The aftermarket filter comes with a new top/cap. You have to have the oem cap to use the OEM filter. You can go to parts store and get that same filter with the built on cap.
They made an aftermarket filter that had the cap incorporated into the top of the filter (that is, when you changed the filter you also put a new cap on the filter canister)...The stock filter was just a filter (an o-rings) and the stock cap for the filter then screwed down over the top of it. I think, by your description that you have the aftermarket filter installed...you might ask here and someone might have a spare filter cover or you can buy one (Ford gets a lot for them) and then just buy the stock filters. I don't know if anyone still makes the filter/lid combination units anymore...
ok, called autozone (jeez i hate that place) they do have one like mine, now what do i use to get the cap off and to get it tight again? that thing is on there pretty good.
ok, got it done. now, im assuming that the filter sits in what people call the fuel bowl, because it looks like a bowl of course. why do you guys want this deleted? is there a performance benny? or other benny of some nature? also, is the aftermarket fuel filter as good as the one that i have?

Open fuel bowl drain valve, try turning by hand, if no go, slip a 1/2 drive head into the star looking hole, and loosen. If the cap cracks, use a block of wood against one of those fins on the top of the cap and a hammer to loosen(carefuly)
so you can run larger fuel lines to the heads, and from the pump. You can run a bigger pump, create more pressure, have better filtering,oh and you dont have to worry aobut the #30 fuse blowing anymore.
And yes you were fine with not doing the draining. maybe a little more of a mess your way , but still fine.
