on my glow plug relay the cap that is on the orange and black wire on my truck is really brittle and now i turn my key to warm up the gp's and that cap starts smoking a little bit do i NEED that cap on the nut or not?
well i have to admit tho that i might have splased a little bit of diesel treat on the relay itself which ik isnt good but i got sloppy and didnt cover it.but i took it for a test drive and the smoking went away which im assuming it was just smoking off the diesel treat additive i put in it...but do i need this rubber boot on the nut tho? and thanks for the help guys really appreciate it
I would think that it is there for a reason. The other lugs are uncovered because they aren't usually hot. I bet the one in question is hot to the battery. I would leave it on.
Some of the electric guru's will chime in soon...Springerpop where are you?
I think Scott should leave his rubber cap on there. It looks fine to me.
The rubber cap is the same kind of thing they put over the positive terminal on the batteries. It helps keep you from bumping it with a wrench and grounding the circuit. It falls into the not required, but not a bad idea category.
Since rubber doesn't usually become hard and brittle it would be a good idea to find out what caused that. The loose wire already mentioned, a bad GPR that's overheating, or spilling some solvent on it are all possibilities.
