Long tube or shorties(does it matter?)

I have a buddy who told me it don't matter whether you go long or short tube unless you're gonna do open headers. I wanted to see what you all thought on the subject. I'm running stock 302.

Thanks,

Josh

From what I have heard is that the shorties arnt much better then the stock ones, as for long tubes you do see gains. It is a bit more work for the long tubes vs the shorties. I still think that shorties are better then stock but I love long tubes so I always do them.

long tubes or shorties are better than manifolds. long tubes will help with more low end torque. I would only use shorties if clearance or room is a issue.

i have shorites on my truck and found out later that they arent much better than stock, long tubes would be the way to go, with shorites if theres a clearence issue!

My one good friend has a 92 ext cab shortbox, with a 302 in it and he has shorties. He is getting rid of them because he says he can never get in there and tighten the exhaust if it ever needs to be done.

my dad always said that the best thing about stock manifolds is that the front cylinders have good low end torque, and the back cylinders are good for the high rpms

Get longtubes. You wont regret it. I had flowtechs on my old 93 f150. I loved them. The sound and the rumble was amazing. Just be sure to paint them with some stove pipe paint first. I put mine on how they were and they were rusty the very next day. Shorties are a waste IMO unless you drive in the upper RPMs most of the time. They actually hurt your low end torque too.

Heres a dyno test sheet (mustang, but it's still a 302) long vs short.
edit: well, okay, not THE test sheet, but the results.....
