Hello- My factory alternator went out December 2006 and then the reman I put in just went out yesterday. I am going to get another one under warranty. Any recommendations on size/type. The one reman I have was supposed to ba a factory replacement (1-2511-FD-1, whatever that means). I am planning on installing the warranty one myself and was wonering if there is any concerns for the DP chip while I do this aside from the regular process of disconnecting the batteries, etc to be careful of. Also, I only installed gauges and chip within the last 2 months, think there is any relationship between the failure of the alternator and the chip install? I did notice when the alternator started to go bad because I was "enjoying" the chip and I smelled the burnt smell of the alternator. Any help appreciated so I get the alternator correct this time. Anyone done the upgrade to a dual alternator setup and/or is that possible?
The chances of the DP being the source of your alternator problems are slim to none. Your alternator problem stems from using a rebuilt in the first place. This is a been there done that lesson that I will not repeat.
Remanufactured is usually not the way to go as far as I have seen anyway. I wish you luck though. I would assume that your warranty is only good for another reman?

Here's some good advice posted by Neal (aka nlemerise) last month:
"I'm not certain, but I think the stock alternator puts out about 100 amps. So the dual setup would give you about 200 amps output. I'd just switch out the stock alternator for a 200 amp high output alternator, rather than go through all the hoops of installing a dual alternator setup. Oh, and the two alternators in the dual alternator setup are different alternators...they are not identical."

Not to mention they're a PITA to install and turn the simple CPS change into a major task. What in the world are you doing that you feel you need 2 alternator's to accomplish?

Honestly, just driving the truck. No towing, plowing. It's my daily driver that I plan on using in a couple of years to tow with. I was thinking maybe the dual setup if that would help prevent this down the road. It was not a reman as I thought. It wasn't motorcraft though, so that might be part of it. Sounds like the warranty won't be an issue, just don't want to do this every year. Thanks for the input guys. At this point I am planning on getting the warranty aftermarket new alternator. If it happens again and I'm out of warranty, maybe I'll go Motocraft. Hard to spend $. Didn't think 400 on an alternator when the factory one only lasted 4 years. Didn't think the DP was at fault, just seemed coincidental.
I'm not a huge NAPA booster, but have had good luck with their new alternators. Plus as much as I travel I can find one of their stores in even the smallest of burgs. Be it in Canada, or the US.
Just out of curiosity, where does that second alternator mount? And what is all involved in changing to two?
I'm pretty sure about the second alternator from the factory is on the passenger side at the bottom. There is a diagram on the radiator support if you want to look for yourself.
Brian, are you telling me that you spent 400 on an alternator? Did I read that correct?
I got a new(not reman) alternator from advanced auto for 180, and it has a lifetime warranty on it.

the second alternator mounts below the AC compressor under the tensioner. it is not a simple swap, as there have to be alot of electronic swaps also. the main 130 amp alt. stays in place and the second is 65 amp IIRC. your PCM also has to be reflashed for a controller program.
