I recently did the clutch on my 85 f150 and I did not have an alightment tool, I did make a great effort to make line it up and it went in fine. I did the clutch on my friends 99 f150 with an alighnment tool. The difference is his feels smooth and mine is very stiff. Mine has not been driven due to the lack of exhuast and a little wiring left to be done. Should I take it apart and use an alighnment tool?
Thanks,
Sean
ive installed many clutches without an alignment tool and as long as the trans went in ok leave it alone cause as soon as you start the engine is should auto align
the other thing it could be is if you have a hydro clutch you may need to bleed it somemore

or theres somthing wrong with your pressure plate
It is a hydro clutch but external slave fortunately. So I will wait till I can drive it before making the final verdict.
The alignment tool is just to make sure the tranny slides in through the splines in the clutch and then into the pilot bearing. If your truck is together, then you have no need for an alignment tool.
Check your clutch set up from the pad on the pedal to the fork in the bell.
Your vintage was subject to firewall (floors in vans) flex. In the van, it puts the rod to the master in a bind. Not sure this could happen in the F series. But, anything that bends can cause a bind somewhere.
