I ahve done alot of reading, but just get more confused. I have a 92 f150 with a 5.8 and an e4od. I tow an enclosed landscape trailer everyday and I am looking for more torque for pulling. The truck is stock at this point. I am looking for the simple upgrades as far as exhaust and intake and cams or what not. any suggestions as well as links would be great! thanks in advance
i would honestly do gears first. the gains will be far better then what motor upgrades you do at this stage. He exhaust is a must regardless though. if you are towing daily look into running 4.10's front/rear especially since you have an OD tranny.
hey thanks for the reply. How hard are the rollers to install? i found a set for like 110 does that sound about right?
Not sure on the price, just remember you get what you pay for in terms of quality. They are relatively easy to install, you have to remove the upper intake, valve covers, and then swap the rockers.

No that's a misconception, back pressure kills power so you don't want a restrictive system like the stock exhaust, but maintaining high air velocity builds more TQ. Best results will be with a high flow cat and muffler and mendrel bent pipe, this will flow lots more than the stock system overall and complement the longtube headers. People put way too much exhaust on these truck in general, and loose performance in the process.
with the 1.7 rockers, should i look into a new cam?
If you're up to it, sure. You pretty much have to strip the motor to change the cam, but it's the best bang for your buck on these motors, IMO, the 5.8 in particular can use all the cam it can get. You could use 1.7 rockers with the cam I have, but if you go much bigger you'll need valve springs as well. There's no point to going beyond 0.500" lift either as the heads don't flow beyond that, but get as much as you can below that.
There are companies that make aftermarket valve bodies for E4OD's, and believe B&M make a shift kit for it as well. That and a Powerstroke trans cooler and deep aluminum trans pan and your transmission will remain cooler under heavy loads. One thing with a valve body or a shift kit is that they will shift hard all of the time; they do not regulate the TV pressure at lighter engine loads, that is done by programming.
I would suggest having a shim kit handy if you plan on doing a 1.7 RR swap.
