rockers

been looking for rockers on epay. is there a differance in 1.6 rockers between ford and chevy? seems to me that the ones that say "for SBC" are a little cheaper then the SBF. then i see a post today that says for "SBC or SBF" is this in fact a true statement? can i buy them and put on my heads?

If you have a late model Ford motor you need pedistal mount rockers, so that probably accounts for the difference in price.

I was wondering this, too. If you have stud mounts, will ones made for a SBC work? I've got D2OE heads with 3/8" studs. I know I need guide plates, too.

Ha!! Yeah.. late model to me is anything with one of the last generations of heads, if you have stud mount rockers then you definitely have an early head.

Those 1970 351W heads have studs all right, but they're pressed-in 5/16 studs. Best bet would be to have the stud bosses milled and tapped for screw-in studs with guide plates. You could go with either 3/8 or 7/16 but the 7/16 are overkill, I'd stay with 3/8.

thats what i thought, in fact the guy i got them from had already had them worked over so they are drilled for 7/16 studs. was a little concerned for a second, did a quick search for 7/16 pedastal mount rockers and got nothing.

ordered rockers last night, full roller.

Did you order pushrod guide plates as well? With full rollers on studs, you need the guide plates and hardened pushrods to keep the rockers in alignment. Also, make sure the stud bosses were milled down to allow clearance for guide plates. As machined by ther factory, the stud bosses would be flush with the valve cover rails, To allow for the thickness of guide plates they should be milled down about .300".

im not sure if the they where milled, but i did order the guidplates and hardened push rods. i have to take them in to get the valves and springs installed anyway so ill make sure they check. the local machine shop does good work, as told by most of the gear heads i know.

why did you order the push rods? do you know how long they need to be? you should set it up with an adjustable pushrod and check the geometry... then order them...

All screw in studs have 7/16" bottom threads. As for using either 7/16 or 3/8 , that's personal choice. The cost for the rockers is the same for both. full 7/16" studs will be stronger.

being that this is my first build im sure ive made a few mistakes on ordering the wrong part at the wrong time. its a learing experiance. dont have alot of local support, just a bunch of phone calls, and internet surfing.
also as for the guideplates they came in yesterday, and it dosent look like they where milled down. what is the reason for this if i might ask.

you need room for the plate and more importantly the nut from the stud... if you don't machine the stud bosses the bottom of the rocker will bind on the head of the stud...

this is my motor, it's not the same as yours but you get the idea...

just bring them back to the machine shop and have them set the heads up for guide plates and screw in studs... They should know what to do... if not find another shop...
