i admit i have jiffy do oil and tranny fluid and same on all our company trucks for me but i almost always go to same one with people i know working there but i alway ALWAYS talk to the guys working on my truck and i stand next to it the entire time and watch every step they make and buddy up to em.
i figure for me with fleet account especially but before we even had that between time and cost it was just worth it to have them do our oil but you have to stand next to the vehicle in the bay buddy up with the guys and watch everything they do every machine and ask question

People like you are the most aggrivating people to a tech. I understand why you watch them, because you want to make sure they do it right...totally understandable. but i am sure anyone on this site that has been or is a tech will agree that the most annoying thing is being watched over your shoulder the whole time you are working.
I guess it was especially aggrivating to me because i never did shady work and it bothered me that people felt they had to baby sit me.
bottom line...if you don't trust the people, go some place else or at least be conspicuous (spelling??) about watching them, and don't try to be their buddy, most tech's aren't a peoples' person, if they were they would be working the register at the front.

Thanks for pointing out the other side of the story. I never thought about it that way. You can count me as an annoying person too. After watching the above video it looks like it pays to be annoying sometimes.

The best ones are the ones that will BS with you about stuff while working on the vehicle.
They aren't afraid of doing the work in front of the customer, and they aren't afraid of screwing anything up that they have to cover up.
I worked at a garage for about 4 years and the customers that liked to watch and were friendly were really not that bad, but the ones who questioned your every move and hounded you about if you were doing things correctly were a pain...This doesnt suprise me with jiffy lube, but its dissapointing because so many people trust them
I own 15 Express Lube locations in San Antonio and we have no problems with customers watching us as we work and interact with us. We like the fact that some customers actually know about and care about there cars or trucks in this case. We don't sell anything, we only make recommendations to our customers, and we only go by manufacturers mileage recommendations not our own.
I serviced my 83 F350 myself for 17 plus years for just this reason. I've collected alot of my own tech tools along the way, and really fear service shops that deal with the masses. The old gas stations with full services are all but gone around us up here in Alaska. Back in the day,(he he) they seemed to have longer term employies and a greater pride, related to there work. Thanks for the news clip I missed that one.
I will never leave my vehicle when it gets worked on. Even at the dealership, I will watch everything they do. I guess it helps that the only thing I will even consider taking it in for is warranty work. You are just setting yourself up to be screwed if you don't watch what is being done. Just my opinion.
I hope nobody takes this personal but doing routine maintenance and repairs is not that hard. Do it yourself. Some people say they don't have time but it takes more time to schedule and wait for someone else than to just do it yourself, even if you take your time and enjoy it. Paying someone else who is in a hurry and doesn't give a rats a$$ about your truck is a recipe to get burned.
I bring my own oil and filter to a local car wash with a lube shop. I get a free car wash which normally would cost $17. So for another $10 they change the oil and I get a full service wash. To me its worth not having to deal with the 15qts of oil that come flowing out. It would end up costing me more money to drive to a oil recycling facility to drop off all the old oil haha.
my job is pool service 85% being residential you have never been hounded on a job until you have worked on a homeowners pool or been checked on constantly by the board of a homeowners association at a community pool. Trust me i know it sucks to have people hanging over you shoulder.
i dont hang over your shoulder and harass anyone though more of a make friends with who i meet and talk to my friends there i should have made it more clear im friends with some of the guys there and i make friends with the other guys there (do it anyways even if they arent workin on my truck never have too many friends). i watch and talk but im not that guy that is driving you out of your mind. Everyone thinks that when you hang over someones shoulder they are more careful i think when you stress someone out annoying them they just get distracted and more likely to makes mistakes...do i have some stories about people hanging on your shoulder one of best ones was when we removed a old pool we had to use a bobcat at minimum and the woman who owned the house wanted no damage to her yard along with plenty of other little details and whats more the pool was way overbuilt by the p/o who was a civil engineer haha
im sayin just watch your vehicle while its geting worked on dont bug guys that dont want to get bugged and dont expect the tech to screw u. and 99.5SD- no offense but some of these guys at jiffy arent techs they just walk in off street and learn how to change oil...and not well its sad because it takes away from real mechanics every industry has there shady characters that give everyone a bad name

Doesn't surprise me at all about Jiffy Lube. I always change my own oil, don't trust anybody else. I've started doing more and more work myself honestly because I don't trust anyone else to do it. Theres a local small shop I use sometimes, that I know and do a good job.
Dealers get pissed off when you ask them for your old parts back. Ask me how I know.
These places have to know your watching. I've had family members that have been burned by dealers already. They all need to be watched. There are also a lot of good places out there too, but finding one is like finding an oasis in the desert.
does not suprise me about jiffy lube or any other oil change place. the people that work there are not techs. techs take a lot more pride in what they do. i would not spend $20,000 in tools, and not use them. i work at a dealership so maybe it is not the same at a independant shop, we do not try to sell you anything. just what is wrong with your car. its the service writers that you have to watch, they are just like used car sales man. most problems at a dealership is started up front with the service writer not giving the tech the info that he needs to fix the car. or trying to diagnose the car in the service drive and sell you something that you do not need
