That certainly true about the dealers. I've asked for parts back before service and about half the time havent gotten them. Brakes especially, i need to learn that install for myself.
Also pretty bad is the A*di dealer I take my wifes car to. The car was nice enough to tell me, over and over every time you start it, that the left rear brake light was out. I called the dealer for a price to change it...$85+part!!! Talked to a technician and he told me how invloved it was to get to for the simple replacement then to put back together again. So i thought i would take a look... Open trunk, remove plastic grommet, losen 1 socket head bolt and assembly was off. Bulb was $1.89 at napa and back together again. Short of driving to napa for the part i spent about 10 minutes at a slow pace and had it done. I can understand the cost of bringing in a vehicle and base charges etc, but dont b/s me about ALL the work involved
my job is pool service 85% being residential you have never been hounded on a job until you have worked on a homeowners pool or been checked on constantly by the board of a homeowners association at a community pool. Trust me i know it sucks to have people hanging over you shoulder.
i dont hang over your shoulder and harass anyone though more of a make friends with who i meet and talk to my friends there i should have made it more clear im friends with some of the guys there and i make friends with the other guys there (do it anyways even if they arent workin on my truck never have too many friends). i watch and talk but im not that guy that is driving you out of your mind. Everyone thinks that when you hang over someones shoulder they are more careful i think when you stress someone out annoying them they just get distracted and more likely to makes mistakes...do i have some stories about people hanging on your shoulder one of best ones was when we removed a old pool we had to use a bobcat at minimum and the woman who owned the house wanted no damage to her yard along with plenty of other little details and whats more the pool was way overbuilt by the p/o who was a civil engineer haha
im sayin just watch your vehicle while its geting worked on dont bug guys that dont want to get bugged and dont expect the tech to screw u. and 99.5SD- no offense but some of these guys at jiffy arent techs they just walk in off street and learn how to change oil...and not well its sad because it takes away from real mechanics every industry has there shady characters that give everyone a bad name
One of my dads good friend (I would consider him a friend as well) use to be a mechanic before he F-ed his back on the job, now he is the PDI manager. Anyways he use to be the automatic tranny guy (geeze lifting Turbo 400s is bad for your back?). They had one regular that use to come in and watch over everybody’s shoulder. Since rebuilding an automatic takes quite a bit of time it stretched through the lunch hour. He sneaked down early from lunch and threw an extra part on the workbench while the guy was away at lunch. Needless to say that there was obviously one part left sitting on the bench when everything was back together. The mechanic picked up the part and said, “what is this? Ah can’t be important and threw it in to the garbage” the customer became irate and off to the service manager he went. Needless to say the mechanic got an earful from the manager and “it better f-in run and not be back in 1000 km”. Some hints are dropped as subtle as a sledge hammer.
I have been on both sides of the fence and still am. Any qualified mechanic doing the proper work and being honest about it shouldn't have a problem with their customers keeping an eye on them and asking ligitimate questions. Of course there is a fine line with some people as they can sometimes be a little overwhelming. Talk to your friends and co-workers for refrences in finding a reputable repair technician or service dealer. you will know their quality of work and honesty when they are up front with you, don't mind your questions and mingling and ultimately stand behind their work.
Money is money and down time is money too. I'll watch but wont be a punk about it. I tend to tip techs who do my work because I may always be coming back and it is a sure fire way to gain some respect.
In this day and age, Don't expect respect from the un-respected.

couldn't say it any better show some respect and you'll get some, most good mechanics know what it means to worry about someone workin on your car but dont be disrespectful about making sure everything is ok
as to the original post...at jiffy lube...watch your car like a hawk........but dont be a a**.
My brother worked for a dealership for less than 3 months because when he had old people that needed brake jobs or other little services once and awhile the service manager told him to pull the vehicle around back and bring it back out in an hour or so. He ended up quitting. Boy was he hot!
I wish I had put some hidden cameras on my old Bronco before taking it to Jiffy Lube. Last time I went there, I got their standard service which includes checking the level of transmission fluid. I had a manual trasmission so checking the fluid level required removing the fill plug and dipping a finger in the hole (no dipstick like on automatic transmissions). Two weeks after this Jiffy Lube service, my transmission grenaded while driving down the highway. The shop I took it to said it failed because there was no fluid in it.
I can't prove anything. But I'm certain Jiffy Lube never checked the fluid level in my transmission. I have a garage mechanic (not gas station mechanic) I have used for several years now. I trust him. But any slick place like jiffy lube or the dealer etc. I don't trust at all.
Do any of you check the little sticker they put on the glass after they change the oil. After my wife came home from an oil change, I went to look at the sticker to make sure they used the correct oil (according to the sticker) anyway. I looked at the next change miles written on the sticker. They had her going back after 1,200 miles. I have her check every time now. I don't change the oil in her car because it is too low for me to get under it.
Something to check if you get your oil changed at one of these quick places.
I have had those jiffy goof ***** recharge the AC in my truck once. About ten minutes into the process, the floor manager (an extremely experienced 17 year old) came into the waiting room to let me know that my truck was overheating. Having just driving the truck for the last half hour with out any issues what so ever, I was curious to find out what the problem was. I approach my truck and the other three teenage workers admiring it and noticed that they had draped fender covers all around the engine compartment and especially over the front grill. I was even more shocked that they were baffled that the engine started to cool down intantly when I removed the cover from the front of the radiator. Gifted chaps they have working there. I have not been back since.
The place I take my truck has the waiting area IN the garage, separated by a fence. I busted them once when they said they checked my tires and they were all at 60 PSI. I replied I wanted them at 70 PSI, I watched the entire time and the tires were not checked and could I please talk with your manager?
That visit was free, that 17 YO "technician" became unemployed and you better know that when my truck comes back in they do what they are supposed to do.
Just an FYI...I have had several brothers who went through some tuff times and required "special assistance" down at the county penitentiary in Del Valle. When they were allowed to work do to good behavior, guess who was recruiting...Jiffy Lube. It's just a cold fact. On of them actually had a grandtheft charge!
With my truck I now go to the dealer on almost everything I cannot fix myself. In the cases that I cannot go to the dealer, I have two reputable shops that have been good to me. But quick lubes are absolutely out of the question.
Please now, I am not calling anyone crooks here, just saying that my bros were and instead of working for dominos, they started out at Jiffy Lube. One now does road work and the other is between jobs. At least not in jail...
