Excellent ON TOPIC post! It certainly makes sense! But don't all modern diesels have a fuel heater? Oh wait...even my old diesel P/U had one and it froze up...

Sounds like a good place to start.

I disagree - I WANT to hear as much as possible about EVERY aspect of auto tech. I personally dont like the noise and smell of diesels, so when I went looking for a cream-puff, and found it was a V-10, grabbed it, and have been happy with it.

Sad fact is, Ford "build quality" and goofy "cheapo" design...has been a joke for well over half-a century. Some of you older types will remember the canvas water-bags we had to use, to get Fords across the desert on warm days, because their cooling systems were inadequate.

To save a buck, Ford used to put the gasoline tank RIGHT OVER your feet in front of the dash board. Many of you remember a later cheap stunt - the famous "gasoline tank that was part of the trunk so you get burned to death in a hard rear end collision" issue.

My 2005 V-10 4wd Excursion now has 20,000 mi on it - I enjoy its capabilities - nothing else on the market that meets our needs ( for VERY heavy towing ).

True, it had to come home on a flat bed when the tranny failed (must have been a "MONDAY MORNING" truck, as the reason for the failure, was, when built, nobody bothered to put hose clamps on the tranny oil lines to the oil cooler !

Oh yes, the truck handled so badly I almost went off the road a couple of times on the drive home from the dealer - but a Hellwig sway bar cured that ( can you imagine marketing a truck supposedly equipped and designed for heavy towing... with ultra soft squishy rear springs....that had no rear sway bar !/

But again...you diesel guys...I have NO problem..and I wish the other gas guys would stop griping about....your talking about the various issues relating to the diesel-vs- gas issues. I know what I wanted, and I got it...but I DISAPPROVE of those who want censorship to cut off info. that others might be interested in.

I agree if the truck stopped at those temperatures and after sitting for 20 mins. started and then stopped again I would look for water. The engine heat while sitting would melt any freeze up close to the engine area. Has anoyone drained the water trap in the fuel filter to check for water? The fact that no water in fule light ever came on doesn't mean no water is there, bulbs do burn out and sencors fail.

Were not censoring anything. Its just that some people are very "diesel biased". U cant take a comment literally from someone that says youll be sad with the v-10, but intern, they have never driven the v-10.

That's the way i run my truck! haven't spit one yet, but yes ford did have the problem with spiting plugs on there earlier heads like 99 to 01 or early 02, then they up graded to the PI heads that have more threads and flow better for a little more power. There are kits around for the blown plug problem that makes it so you don't have to remove the head to fix it.

Wouldn't the water in fuel light come on if there was water in the Fuel?

73DieselDog,

Sorry to hear about your luck and I certainly understand your frustration. However, sometimes it's the simple things that cause what appear to be major problems. The earlier posting referencing possible water in the fuel is good advice. Also, you may have fueled from an unfiltered, low tank that also got some trash in the tank that could either be stopping up your fuel filter or the pickup sock in the tank.

As for the comment about the "water in fuel" indicator, if the moisture is freezing down in the fuel line or in the fuel filter on the frame, it might not make it up to the sensor. Also, they're not always that reliable.

Hang in there! It will get getter!

If you look on eBaY right now, about 70% of the Excursions are diesels.

I would drain the water separator on the frame rail and change both fuel filters.

I would then add a full bottle of Standyne in the tank and fill her up with diesel from a reputable station, preferably where the diesel sells quickly like a truck stop.

It is also possible that the HPOP is going bad. The high pressure oil pump serves to provide high motor oil pressure (up to 3500 psi) to the injectors. If yours is going bad it wont have enough pressure to fire the injectors. I believe there is a TSB for this.

Good luck.

I thought the TSB was only for the 7.3 but I may be wrong.
