weird engine idle....

I recently put a torker manifold onto my 351C. All is well except that I think I need a new high-stall converter as i had to raise the idle.... In any case, when i was setting the idle in drive, it made a difference whether or not the hood was up or down: I set the idle to a minimum with the hood down and when i lifted the hood the engine stalled. This was with the air cleaner assembly off. A similar thing happened when I fitted the air cleaner assembly; ie the engine would stall with the hood up or down. Any ideas why this may be happening? I though that it may either be that the air velocity is too low with the hood up or else the intake air was just not as warm or something. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have the answer to your problem but I am trying to picture how you set the idle with the hood down.

Just a stab in the dark as they say, have you adjusted the idle mixture, sounds like it's way fat and limiting the air in is choking it to the point of stalling.

well, it takes a few seconds to stall so i held the throttle open with my fingers and quickly closed the hood... it was running OK. then i lift the hood and it stalls.

Well, must admit, this is a good one. Another stab, is any wiring near the hood or hinges other than the lite on the underside of the hood (if you have one). Only thing I can think of right now is that the hood being closed is moving a wire and breaking contact. Ground wire from engine to firewall? or the hood is hitting or moving the coil, battery or some other such wire which would ground out that wire and cause a loss of fire to the plugs? Just didn't really sound like an idle mix problem, just didn't have any other ideas! Do you have the choke working? Just another thought, but if it's not fully warmed, with no choke this could be the cause of the problem. I know, doesn't really make sense, but just can't think of anything else! Good luck in tracking this one down, if I do think of anything else, I'll post it.

It's definitely not a wiring problem, i checked that. Someone I spoke to yesterday thinks it may be that with the hood up, (ie colder air charge) the mixture may run too lean. Oh, the engine was warmed up, too. I think I'll just take it to my mechanic and let him retune my holley, cos i'm pretty sure thats where the problem is.

I worked it out!!! it's fixed!!! it was a vacuum leak... a small hole between the spacer and the inlet manifold. I plugged it with silicone and it's fixed!

Hey, thanks for posting back what the problem was! Glad to hear it was something that simple and easy to fix! Thanks again, always nice to know if/how the problem was solved.
