ok, here we go. the 400 4 bolt main. it was found if cars only.
and it was produced in 1973. it was found in ltd's and other full size fords, mercurys, and some lincolns. they had the small block or windsor bell housing. this is commenly referred to as the 400 fmx block. the transmisson code in the 73 is phb-ad. this information is printed in the how to rebuild ford v8 engines by tom monroe. hpbooks-36.
Nice try. There's no mention of any 4 bolt main 400s in the Monroe book regardless of the bellhousing bolt pattern. Why would Ford build a 4 bolt main for a motor that never even came with a 4V? The only difference between the D3AE FMX blocks and the rest of the 351M/400 blocks is the B.H. pattern. Period.
ok in the monroe book page 25 at the bottom. it contains 2 pic and a little blurb about it. also one of the pantera engine builders had built one and got 577hp out of it. here is the link

gee if i had that answer, id be famous. but they did. also found on the web somewhere, someone milled the stock 400 intake into a 4v intake. he stated that it looked as if ford was planning on making a 4v intake and changed thier mind. the site was about stroking a 400 to a 434 or so

Yeah I know about the 434 stroker, I posted the link to the article. Bottom line, the Monroe book still doesn't say on pg. 25 or anywhere else that the 400 "FMX" came stock with 4 bolt mains. Now with enough machining it can probably be made to fit 4 bolt mains but I'm virtually certain it didn't come from the factory that way.
i have 3 books about building the 335 series engins, and in one of them it stats that a few of the 1973 blocks came with 4 bolt mains, and that ford never carried them as a part item. as for why they did this i dont know. but ford has done a lot of stupid things, for the sillyist reasons. i have also seen a lot of references to this 4 bolt main 400 on a few web sites on the internet. one of the pantera sites had done a 4 bolt 400, and the tech talk was in the detomas mailing list. but i can not refind the orig site. i think it was hall pantera, also doug cooke built a 400, but dont remeber about the mains.
