what years? what cars? had these motors? how much would be good price for 80,000 to 100,000 and then over 100,000 be rebuild? also had chevy guy tell me that short blocks are junk .doesnt matter who or where you get it. thanks macks
Hey macks, I've never bought an engine from the junkyard so I can't tell you what a good price would be. I think you should tell your chevy friend that his short block is a piece of crap. The 351M/400 were never proclaimed as the best engine that ford came out with but it can be made into a good engine for ya. Look through this entire section and try to get some pointers. I do know that parts are more widely available and cheaper for the 351W and the 460. Also the 351W is quite a bit lighter. It's what ever flips your trigger. I have a 390 and plan on rebuilding it. Talk about heavy and expensive. I also don't know of any cars that these motors were put in. They may have but I don't know. They did put them in trucks I believe from the mid 70's to early 80's.
Macks - Ford made the 400 from the early 70's through 1980, the 351m came along in '74 and was also produced through '80. They were put in trucks, vans and large passenger cars, LTD's and such. I recently bought a 351C from a junkyard for $100 complete. Hey, if you live near Tulsa, Oklahoma I have a late 70's 351m with heads that I can make you a good deal on.
hey shawnb iam in northern new york .thanks anyway i found an m in a garage siting on its valve covers, got to find out more info on it.when i saw it i could see it in my mind,400 all rebuilt OH BABY thanks macks
A few years ago I got a 400 with 116000 miles on it for 200$ from a junk yard. It was a little rough, but ran fine. I think that might be a little less than the going price for one that runs so nice, but with junk yards, you never know.
I've run a 400 Ford since 1980, in a tow truck, and had the head off once because the timing chain broke and bent the pushrods. That's the ONLY time I've had to work on the truck, though I was repeatedly told (by chevy owners, mostly) the the 400 has a bad bottom end. I WISH all equipment lasted so long.
I picked up a reman 400 and c6 combo in a smashed ltd2 for a guy i worked with for $200. hell of a deal for motor and trany with less than 30000 miles on them and all mantiance records.
If youre in New York, Im in new jersey if you still need a 351M im here for two more weeks, then i move to georgia, so if you want the 351 conatact me, it runs good, in teh truck stilll, you can hear it, maybe take the whoel truck and drive it home, depends if i take teh trany outta it and put it into my other 78...

the 351m/400c/m ran for a long time. the 400c/m ran from 1971-1982, with the 351m running from 1975-1982. one of the biggest errors people have with these motors are, they suck. this is really misleading, after all the are clevelands. the difference betrween the 351 and the 400 is the crank and pin placement on the pistons. thats right, its the same block.
rebuilding one of these are simple, the deck height is .0565, a lot more than most other motors, but can use all the 351c cams. the 400 is the better one to have because, it has the same pin height on the pistons as the 351c, so all you have to do is bush the rods of the 400, toss in the 351c pistons and bang, its a great chevy killer. if you can find 351c 4v heads, add those as well.
one of the reasons these motors were rated low on hp was the cam timing was retarted 4 degrees, this robbed the engions of 40-50 hp. there are 3 really good books to get that cove rebuilding and background information, get them

these are found at local book stores or online.
id take the 400 anyday, the best 400 is found in 1973 ford cars, they had 4 bolt mains and the small block tranny bell houseing.
I have a 73' Ranchero with a 400m and a c6. Does that have a 4 bolt main? I am in the process of restoring the car and I want more out of the engine. Is that engine worth rebuilding and building up or should i look for something better.

Please, tell us more about these 4 bolt main 400 Ford engines. Or did I misunderstand? I'd venture that's a fairy tale but I try to keep an open mind. Heck, my wife says there's a hole in it.
