did ford ever make a escort diesel, and what years if they did? A guy at work was telling me he had one several years ago,and it got around 50 mpg. This guy isn't the most knowledgeable when it comes to cars,so I am kind of skeptical.
Early 80s. I have seen one, even saw one that had a turbo added and was used for drag racing. Kinda funny, it had a 3" open exhaust that dumped behind the driver's front tire, and these wide slicks that stuck way out on the front. You couldn't drive it with the window down, it would fill the cabin with smoke so bad it wouldn't clear before the end of the track.
Yup, knew a Chapain in the Air Force who had one. Would have been back in the mid to late 80's. Don't recall the year of the car, but it was definitely a diesel.

Darn close. I got 47 with an 85 Escort Diesel and 40 with an 85 Tempo Diesel on trips. Both were 5-Speed trans.
Another little known Ford diesel vehicle is the 1984-85 Lincoln Continental/Mark VII diesel. 2.4L Steyr, 6 Cylinder, Turbodiesel. About 30-35mpg average is reported.
I recall a guy I knew in high school who had a Ranger that had a diesel engine in it. This would have been in the mid-80's as well. Can't say for sure, but I'm thinking it might have been a Perkins engine. I believe that the truck was made that way from the factory, as it had fender emblems that said "DIESEL" under the "Ranger" emblems. He and his brother drove the thing for a long time after they got it. Eventually, my pal yanked that engine and put in a blown 429 and made it a drag racer. He tubbed the rear end, did a killer paint job on it, but left the fender emblems on it, with a question mark painted after them.
Anybody else ever see a diesel Ranger? I can only recall this one truck, and have never seen another one, of any year, since then.

Steyr, which is a division of BMW (the Steyr plant in Austria builds the X3).
Don't ask me why I know that, or why I even thought it was important enough to post!

Judging by your user name, it's a piece of Lincoln trivia that you would likely be aware of. If you actually own(ed) a Mark II I'm very jealous, sir!
The Steyr diesel in the Mark VII was also used in BMW vehicles of that vintage, IIRC the 525-TD? (I know it was a 5xx-TD).
It was indeed a BMW designed engine, built by Steyr-Puch as it was known at the time. They also used a Bosch charging and glow plug system, and the trans was a ZF 4 speed auto w/overdrive. Ford claims there were 8 cars built with a 5-Speed/OD ZF manual trans, but none are known to exist today. Total production was about 3000 for 1984-1985.
I want one so bad I can smell it.
Tom.
"Hi, My name is Tom, and I'm a Lincoln Mark VII addict"..."Hi Tom.."
Ive seen wrecked diesel ranger before. None of these diesel are very common though. I would love to grab one though.
I have been looking for one of those for a month now..There is one on Ebay that I have been watching but the bidding went over what I thought it would be worth

First Ranger diesels were Mazdas, then they switched to a Mitsubishi diesel.
