im probably going to change my transmision gear oil soon what are your recomendations on gear oil. my 1st-2nd is hard to shift and somtimes grinds when shifting the first couplemiles i drive in the morning i dont realy expect to have an improvment in that area with a gear oil change but i dont want it to get worse. i had that happen to me on a nother truck i had before the 1-2 gear shift was rough changed the gear oil and after that it was almost imposible to get a clean shift. also im probably going to do my axels at the same time.
Put Amsoil in mine. Did not help with the problems i have with mine but didnt hurt either. The stuff sure dose stink. Make sure you dont get any in your truck or for a long time you will have to heare people say whats that smell when they get in your truck.
I did too the first time around. Drain that crap out and put some Royal Purple in it. I was amazed that there could be such a large difference in synthetic oils....I mean night and day immediate difference in the ease of shifting as well as noise reduction. That prompted me to remove the amsoil from my transfer case and differentials as well. Filled those with RP and Valvoline synthetics....similar results.
Plus you can get RP and Valvoline at NAPA...no need to go hunting for a dealer.
I thought about using Synchromax, but it says on the S-max bottle to use their regular ATF if it calls for Mercon.....well, I don't remember exactly what it said, but something on the bottle made me put it down and go with their straight ATF.
I know there are a few guys on here running the S-max without issue.
sure as **** i pulled out my bible (owners manual) and it says 5 speed overdrive transmision (zf s5-42) (mazda-r2) motorcraft synthitic mercron looks like ill need a little less than 4 qarts does this sound right?
any manual trans with an aluminum case should take atf. that is the guideline that ive always been told and gone by. i put royal purple in the motar of my little car (gas getter) and it made much more of a difference than i ever thought an oil could make. and the next service interval that comes around on the psd i will be switching to rp in it too. when the trans comes in it will also be receiving rp. and when i put the ls in the rear...you guessed it its getting rp. longer service intervals and the performance difference makes its all worth it....just my .02 tho. dan

I agree a syn, is better, I have a auto but my axles I use Valvoline Syn. 75-140 with additive for Posi. Not a beleiver of RP used it my 383 stroker in my Jeep and made a lot of lifter noise, I se Rottella T now in all my engines, Cam companies recomend because of Zinc content for Hyd. lifter wear ,plus RP is over priced Valvoline is alot cheaper and been around forever.
get the synthetic manual trans fluid, i used the ford stuff in my t-5 and it was a night and day difference, i would use that before synthetic auto trans fluid
