Got a question for all you 351m experts. I have a completely stock 351m and recently upgraded to Taylor 9mm wires, motorcraft plugs, and Accel 8140C coil. With the added spark that the coil provides and less resistance that the wires provide should I upgrade to an aftermarket distributor? I'm wondering if all the problems I'm having are related to too much juice passing through what looks to be the original 23yr old distributor and stator pickup?
I'm using a stock OEM DuraSpark II (DS2) distributor with stock DS2 ignition box, Accel 8.8 spiral-core wires, and Mallory ProMaster coil on my 351M.
Try putting a timing light on the engine. If the timing marks are stable at various rpm, and advance is smooth as rpm increases, then your distributor is ok. It might not look as sexy, but it works fine. If the timing marks wobble around when the rpm is steady, then you have worn out bearings/bushings in your distributor, and it's time for an upgrade.
The stator and pickup send a trigger signal to the DS2 ignition box. They do not handle any ignition voltage. You can replace those parts (about $25), if you're concerned for their reliability.
Otherwise, just keep a good cap and rotor on the distributor. I change my cap and rotor at every other plug change.
