I need HELP!!! Please and thank you in advance. I (The Mom) have a 1989 Ford F150 that is going to be in the hands of my 15 year old son.
Problem: Won't start when it is cold. It will only start if you spray gasoline into the starter. It will stay started and you can drive it. If you leave it running for awhile - you can turn it off and start it right back up. If you leave it for 20 minutes it will not start again -unless of course you spray gasoline on it. I had all the injectors changed and replaced with new ones but it still does the same thing.
Anyone have any ideas? It is a dual tank and I had all the gas cleaned out since the truck has sat for awhile.
When is the last time the cap and rotor was cleaned or replaced, Pull your plugs clean and re-gapp them.
lift the 2 tabs on both sides of the distributor cap, flip it over (with the plug wires attached)and look at the contact points on the rim of the cap. If they are built up with corroison , scratch them clean/flush with a butter knife blade. Also clean the metal tab of the rotor button in the center of the distributor ,Put the (grooved) cap back on , lock the tabs back and try to crank it.
There is a sticker under the hood , it will tell you the "This vehicel conforms to the emmission standard of 1988" , the timing settings, and what the plugs should be gapped at.
This will cause cold start problems , and it is a good start on tracking down what the real problem is.
Buy a book on the Truck you will find it to be well worth the money.
A gapping tool is $1.50
If the plugs and cap are good , then you go torwards the fuel and electrical componets.
Everyone is suggesting an ignition problem. I am thinking a fuel delivery problem. Try this the next time you go to start it cold: Turn the ignition switch to on wait 5 seconds, turn the switch off and back on and wait 5 seconds, do this atleast a dozen times before you try to start it. I am thinking either the fuel pressure regulator or the fuel pump is not holding the pressure, this should repressurise the system.
