i was wondering if anyone had figured out what the best/cheapest way is to filter used motor oil to burn it in my 7.3.
i want to save money so i dont want to damage any internals.
is there some kind of filter that can be purchased at tractor supply?
One of the biggest reasons for changing your oil is because one of the by products of combustion is water. Some of this gets by the rings and mixes with the oil and forms an acid that can eat away at the bearings in the engine.
I believe if you can filter the oil good enough not to affect the fuel injection system, then it should be good enough to put back in the engine correct? After all, the injection pump and the injectors are a tight tolerance complicated piece of machinery just like the engine?
Here is something I may try with my old beach truck. Use an old water heater (like in the appleseed BD units) to heat the used motor oil. Use water misting to help filter the used oil. Then run it through a 5 micron filter. After which I will mix it say 25/75 with diesel to start out with. I'm thinking this should work ok.
I've said this in the past but my FiL mixes all his used unfiltered oil into his diesel for his logging operation. Everything from his DD to his Kenworth. He has been doing this for years with no problems yet. I am not so bold as that, but I do have a plentiful supply of used motor oil from the tugboat I run. We have 2100 gallon onboard right now. I have asked my Chief Engineer to see about running it through the centerfuge before pumping it into 55 gallon drum to load into my truck. Problem is the centerfuge is hard piped into our fuel manifold system..were working on it.
I have access to all this used motor oil and normaly we just pump it off and it is reinjected into the TAPS (Trans-Alaska Pipeline System) mixed with the crude oil and sent to America for refining.

I work at a shop so when I do a service on a truck that uses a Fleetguard ff105 fs212 or fs1000 fuel filter I drain them and bring them home. I got a cummins filter head that works with them and I pump the used oil though them then into my tank. I also run used transmission fluid to clean things up in the fuel system. I have done this for a few years now with no problems other then changing a filter on the side of the road b/c I was to lazy to do it before I left on my trip. I have a 7.3l now with the spendy fuel filters so I think I am going to put another pre-filer in front of it.
Thats all I do filter down to 10 microns or better then just dump it in. But I don't use other peoples used diesel oil or over the road truck oil. You have no clue how many miles it on that oil and it get kinda thick and sooty. All my friends give me there gas car oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic oil, used fryer oil and I just poor it in 50/50 and run it.
O I forgot to say I use the back tank for the funny fuel and the front with good old $3.85 gal on road fuel just in case I didn't get the mix right in the rear tank. I have mixed it a little thick before and have had to switch to the front tank. I also start the truck on the front tank and switch to the front tank a few miles before I shut down for the day.
