fuel pump eccentric on 351W

i'm pretty sure i need to replace the fuel pump drive eccentric, but i have a few questions. is there anything special i need to know about replacing it? i've read that there are 1 piece and 2 piece ones and that some need a longer cam dowel than others. i was considering switching to an electric pump, but that's more than i want to spend and i don't want the hassle that goes along with electric accessories. i was trying to avoid pulling the whole front of the motor apart, but i think that's probably the best route to take. how involved is it to replace the eccentric? what do ya'll think?

If you look in my gallery i am currently building a 351W. you will need the 7/16 as it sits flush with the inside of the eccentric. Hope it helps.

The 2 pc eccentric is stamped steel, and needs no cam dowel to drive it, there's a bent tab on the center piece that fits into the dowel hole on the cam timing gear to drive it. The cam dowel is shorter with this one and only drives the cam timing gear. There are two different thickness cast fuel eccentrics (these are the 1 pc ones) that I've seen, I have all three types in my posession. No way to install either without completely tearing down the front dress to remove the timing cover. Why do you think the eccentric is bad?

well, i figure that's all it can be. i've been having problems with fuel pressure and keeping fuel in the line to the carb, so replaced the pump. the problem didn't get much better and has now gotten to the point that it wont even start. there's no fuel coming out of the pump. i ran a line from the pump into a gas can and it's not pumping. i pulled the pump and you can see that the eccentric is barely making contact. that was with a holley pump, so i tried a stocker and the eccentric doesn't even touch it. what else could it be?

The drive tab may have broken off in that case, and the eccentric is centered now. Time to tear it down and see.

so, if the drive tab has broken off, what will it take to fix that? i'm just trying to get an idea of what i'm up against here. if that is the case, will i still be replacing the eccentric? how bad is this going to be? i'm a decent parts-replacer, but i'm definitely not a mechanic. thanks for all your help, by the way.

Yea, you'll still need to replace the eccentric. The two piece assembly from Ford is something you don't want to buy though. Better to get one from a used motor. Last time I priced the 2pc from Ford it was $75-80 and that was 5 years ago. And if I'm not mistaken Ford is the only source for a new 2 pc.

The whole front of the engine accessory drive needs to come off to the point where the timing cover can be unbolted and removed. There's also four bolts in the cover thru the oilpan too. You'll also need a harmonic balancer puller for this job.

It sounds like it might actually be easier to install an electric pump for now. Then if the engine has to come apart in the future you could install a replacement eccentric, which you should have been able to get for next to nothing at a swap meet or junk yard.

so you do have to pull the harmonic balancer? i'm actually doing the job right now. i've got everything off the front of the motor, but now i'm wondering how to get the timing cover off. i got the 2 bolts at the top out and there's one about half way down on the right, got that one. how many bolts are there total? i only see 2 more, the ones through the oil pan. is that it? 5? is it absolutely necessary to pull the balancer? i'm done for couple hours, but i'll be back on it in a little while. hopefully someone will have read this and answered me by then. thanks a lot fellas!

two on the top... two on each side in the lower corners, one side has the timing pointer... then there is 4 through the oil pan... Plus the big long ones that hold the pump on... go easy on the long ones holding the pump on they have a tendancy of breaking in the block... and yes you need a puller...

not confused, but thanks for caring... anyway, thanks a lot HM. after all this, i think i'm going to have to side with beanscoot. a buddy of mine is giving me an electric pump, so i think i'm going to just go with that and worry about tearing the motor down later. just out of curiosity, do you have to drop the oil pan? or just separate it?
