ok well i have a 78' F-150 Custom 4x4, and it has...
-a 400c.i.d./6.6L V8
-C6 auto tranny
-NP 203 Transfer Case
-9inch posi rear/dana 44 posi up front
-33x10.50 super swamper tsl radials
-long tube headers and high flow exaust
those are the big thing right now, but it gets a bad vibration at about 45mph and a chatter in the steering wheel when it real bad. sometime it just goes away, and sometimes it dosnt even do it. it just had a front end alignment, and the tires were recently balanced. the truck had a frame off resto 8 years ago and only has 28,000 miles on it since. the total mileage on the truck is only 89,000 original miles.
also i have a 1992 mustang lx 5.0 convertible with a 5spd and 51,000 miles that does the same thing at 50mph, but the back tires are almost bald on it
wheel bearings r good... just inspected and i was there and made sure they were checked right. i think its up front somewhere cause the steering chatters some???
2nd the trac-bar thing. Since its been 8 yrs since frame off resto, i would order some polyurethane bushings from broncograveyard. com or somewhere and replace them. the polys are tighter and are resistant to oil and other cleaners and chemicals that will make them brake down and get loose. If you have time and can do the work yourselft buy a whole poly bushing kit: c-bushings, radius arm, and trac-bar bushings and will tighten up the whole front end.
I just went through this same problem at 45 my truck would vibrate it was the needle bearing in the passanger side spindle the bearing between the front axle u-joint and the spindle. The bearing is in the spindle. To check reach into axle housing and see if you can move the axle around.

that would only happen when in 4x4 or the hubs locked in.
it is a NP203 full time 4x4 (well it auto engages), and it does seem to do when 4x4 kicks in, also could the fact that when the 4x4 kicks in the posi locks up have anything to do with it?.... it did get worse when i crossed a 4-lane with a concrete center median strip ant 35-40mph(it was late...so no other traffic) to save time, but i had an appointment to get the front end realigned the next day anyway, and the alignment did help some
