How many of you guys who have had tranny failure have had it suddenly just quit? I had mine fail today at the first stop sign as I left work, no good. I limped it out to a tranny shop when after shutting it off and letting the crap in the filter settle back into the pan it'd drive about a mile or not then stop driving the truck. So the tranny shop says it'll be done for anywhere from 2000-2500 ish and ready to drive and I like the price cause then I don't have to do the work! what kinda prices have you all paid at a tranny shop for a rebuild? Anyone have suggestions on upgrades that I can suggest?
My shop charges $1200 with converter. I new a guy that works there and they did it for me for $950 with 2 year warrenty.
WOW.. thats quite cheap!!! a standard rebuild kit for the 4R100 is about $500.00 so your shop will R&R the trans, rebuild it, and put in a new converter for another $700.00...what shop is this???
there are some upgrades to make the 4R100 very strong, but think if I was going that route would either get a BTS or John Wood transmission and not worry about it again

Same here. Mine is going to John Wood Transmission when it dies. It may be cheaper to go to a regular shop, but two tranny's are also pretty expensive
At the very minimum I would have them put the TransGo Tugger shift kit in. If you do that you will not have to worry about a valve body. They are cheap IIRC. Like under $100.
it is Oliver Bros transmission in Copperas Cove, Tx. I was told they us a company that advises upgrades nationally based on failures and that I'd get all the suggested upgrades for 2500ish. I went and looked at the pan today and it looked like it had a mini donut around the magnetic drain. NOT GOOD
but its gonna get started on monday and I can't wait to have her back even at almost 4$ a gallon fuel
Ya, That would work...not sure about the available "ratio's"....
Just seems like the mfg's would, engineer this stuff...called "Towing Pkg's" ...for the job they take your $$$ in the name of !
Rather than havin us find we need to invest several thousand -MORE $$$ to get it closer to right
I know it's been such a big issue that --Now-- 10-20 years in, they are ALL now useing at least 5 speeds...
And a few are out with Automatic.. 6 speeds, and a couple of 7 speeds that can handle considerable torque
(Automatics are good for us old guys with wore out legs and hips...from all those years of jammin gears-and operating equip..and stoppin bullets and flying steel..and nail gun accidents...an bar fights, and motorcycle mishaps, and plane crashes....and CowBoy accidents... an stuff !
