%*$@*! Tranny!

How many of you guys who have had tranny failure have had it suddenly just quit? I had mine fail today at the first stop sign as I left work, no good. I limped it out to a tranny shop when after shutting it off and letting the crap in the filter settle back into the pan it'd drive about a mile or not then stop driving the truck. So the tranny shop says it'll be done for anywhere from 2000-2500 ish and ready to drive and I like the price cause then I don't have to do the work! what kinda prices have you all paid at a tranny shop for a rebuild? Anyone have suggestions on upgrades that I can suggest?

WOW.. thats quite cheap!!! a standard rebuild kit for the 4R100 is about $500.00 so your shop will R&R the trans, rebuild it, and put in a new converter for another $700.00...what shop is this???

Had the 4R100 go out in my '99 PSD, $2100 included Billet torque converter, shift kit, etc.

Good Luck!

there are some upgrades to make the 4R100 very strong, but think if I was going that route would either get a BTS or John Wood transmission and not worry about it again

Same here. Mine is going to John Wood Transmission when it dies. It may be cheaper to go to a regular shop, but two tranny's are also pretty expensive

At the very minimum I would have them put the TransGo Tugger shift kit in. If you do that you will not have to worry about a valve body. They are cheap IIRC. Like under $100.

the shop is...

it is Oliver Bros transmission in Copperas Cove, Tx. I was told they us a company that advises upgrades nationally based on failures and that I'd get all the suggested upgrades for 2500ish. I went and looked at the pan today and it looked like it had a mini donut around the magnetic drain. NOT GOOD
but its gonna get started on monday and I can't wait to have her back even at almost 4$ a gallon fuel

..WELL...aint had major trouble with my E4OD...YET, (1997 F-250HD 4X4 7.3 PowerStroke CrewCab w/E4OD)

But I can tell you -I'm expecting trouble ! (170,000 miles)

I tow a 7500lb travel trailer, and I have had "A LOT OF EXPERIENCE" sittin behind a big diesel engine--over the road "Big Rig"trucking

And I have NEVER seen such a sorry excuse for a transmission, mated to a diesel engine, As the E4OD.....

This is because diesels deliver the peak torque/horse power at very narrow rpm ranges,

And the E4OD simply has -to few- gears to qualify as a "towing" transmission....hard on the engine... and just plain a -killer- for the transmission !

The trans SHOULD be geared to split at no higher rpm range than about 400 rpm....between gears

Mine has a "split" range of about 600rpm (?) and into OD....way up to about 7-800 (?)

Perhaps someone has the actual rpm split's between gears, and can verify the actual numbers

Never the less....these trucks need a tranny that has a split range that requires about 6 speeds --7 speeds would be even better for "serious towing"

No wonder they have a bad reputation in the trucks that do any towing !

.tho ok for a "socer moms SUV"

For "THE PRICE", Im thinking of building a 70'-80's Ford CrewCab..with a 12 valve Cummins (w/up-grades) and a FULLER 7 SPEED OD Transmission....

If you want to split the gears, get a Gear Vendor overdrive unit.

Ya, That would work...not sure about the available "ratio's"....

Just seems like the mfg's would, engineer this stuff...called "Towing Pkg's" ...for the job they take your $$$ in the name of !

Rather than havin us find we need to invest several thousand -MORE $$$ to get it closer to right

I know it's been such a big issue that --Now-- 10-20 years in, they are ALL now useing at least 5 speeds...

And a few are out with Automatic.. 6 speeds, and a couple of 7 speeds that can handle considerable torque

(Automatics are good for us old guys with wore out legs and hips...from all those years of jammin gears-and operating equip..and stoppin bullets and flying steel..and nail gun accidents...an bar fights, and motorcycle mishaps, and plane crashes....and CowBoy accidents... an stuff !

$2200-$2500 isn't bad for a rebuilt 4R100 with shift kit, new converter and install. Get a quote from the stealership, that will make your jaw drop.

If you never want to buy another tranny again you could get one of these.
