Is there a way to lock out over drive on the 5 speed TS tranny? We made a tour last few weeks puliing a 6x12 enclosed trailer. In the wind there wasn't enough power to pull at 70 in over drive. It would hold for a while and then start dropping off until it would down shift. Then it was off to the races until I had let off so much to keep it under 75 that it would shift back to OD. Endless annoying game.
Ther may be somethig wrong because my milage has went down even empty. I might be able to get 10.5 on the highway, but haven't checked a tank that averaged that for quite a while now. Have about 7500 on the clock.
While towing...you should be in 'Tow/Haul' mode. In that mode...the tranny should be giving you the best options to keep speed.
IMO...I would have the tranny checked...if it cannot keep speed with the load that you are towing. However, you did not give the weight either...so hard to say.
Must be something wrong, with a 10K trailer behind my truck has no problems towing, and mine has the 4.10 rear. With the torqueshift in tow/haul you should not be having those problems.
Thanks guys. Tow haul made no difference. The only thing it seems to do is up shift rpms a small amount and downshifts slightly sooner when slowing down. Trailer weight is maybe 2500 lb. It's much more the wind resistance than the weight. When it down shifts and runs at over 3000 rpm it takes almost no throttle to hold 70 mph.

Also...keep in mind that the V10 loves the higher rpm range. This is NOT a diesel...that runs out of breath at 3000rpm, but just starts to breath. Any where in the 2700-4200 rpm is where the V10 loves to tow at...and do it all day long.
I understand about the rpm range Biz. The problem in this circumstance was that I could not keep it there. When it was in 4th I needed so little throttle to keep it at the desired speed that it would upshift. Hence the question about being able to add a way to lock out OD.
As a side note I am very impressed with the engine at those higher revs. Very smooth and quiet. Would not know it was running over 3 grand without a tach. Pulling out to pass a slower rig from 55-60 mph is impressive too. Put your foot into it and let that engine do it's magic. Accelerates as good as my diesel did in that type of conditions. Maybe even better from 55 but not quite as good as speed gets over 75. Much closer than I expected, so I'm not disapointed at all. Just want to learn to get the most out of it.
To my knowledge o/d cannot be locked out with the torqshift trans. I used to run a 6.0 Powerstroke and that was the case then as well. I just traded in a Duramax LBZ and it has been an interesting learning curve watching the v10 rev like it does. I was towing approx 7,000 lbs today (up a pass) and am going to have to get used to the new powerband. My Duramax would hardly ever downshift while this new truck likes to rev to make the power. This 3 valve pulls awesome though I'm definetly pleased with this truck.
A custom tune can be written that applies all of the tow/haul functions to the regular shift schedule, and when you press the tow/haul button-you can set it up to never upshift to OD. I'm working on this with mine right now,but it's tricky due to the 6 speeds, and the way the downshifts are scheduled.

Remmy, I know exactly what you mean about the revs, as I traded a Dmax for the V10 also. Overall I am really enjoying the gasser though. Still haven't located the "wait to start" light, But I look for it often.
Johnny, What are you using to write the custome tune?

I use SCT's Advantage software. Just about any of the software packages (Diablo's CMR, Sniper's Special Forces)will allow you to do this, you just need the "racer package" or similar,or a tuner that'll listen to your input and make the adjustments accordingly to get it where you want it.
