Thinking about picking up a 98 F150 4x4, V8 Triton, 3 door. Took a hit on the drivers door and the door frame. No damage to truck frame rail or box, roof has some small bumps. Clipping the cab doesn't give me a problem but was wondering if the V8 Triton or drive train has any "known" issues ? It will have a salvage title.
You state V8 but not 4.6L or 5.4L. The 4.6 is hard on spark plug wires (I'm thinking the 98 had wires) and both require attention when changing the plugs so as not to have the "blow out" problem but both are good engines. 146K on my 5.4L no problems.
E4OD and 4R70W are both reliable trannys as long as filters and fluid are kept clean, only other drivetrain issue I can think of is if you have a rear limited slip diff, the axle may chatter, for some reason the engineers decided steel wasn't good enough and started using friction plates like the automatic trannys do. Over all if the preventative maintenance has been done ...good truck.
I have the exact same truck, 4.6... 142,000 miles. It is my work truck, so it goes every day. I do the oil-filter thing every 3,000 miles, did the plugs at 100,000 miles (they still looked new). Just basic maintenance, always runs like a top, 4 wheel drive stuff still like new. I had the dreaded exhaust stud rot off, DS, had a exhaust leak, spent a weekend pulling that off and fixing all related. I live in a cold climate and it always starts, I plug it in if below -0. I even have the original battery still in it! Shows no signs of death. Oh... I did the alternator at 100,000 miles, that's like a 30 minute job on these trucks. Good truck... I will buy another...
