Hello,
Can anyone recommend a good quality oil filter wrench that grips the filter from the end instead of the strap type that is designed to be used from the side.
I have a filter to remove with very little room to the side. I need to come up from the bottom. Need a wrench that grips good and does not slip.
Any recommendations??
Thanks in advance.

It would help to know what your application (motor/year) is. They do make filter wrenches that you can adjust the diameter on, and have a bolt head on the bottom that you can put a socket or box wrench on. Just google 'oil filter wrench'.
I dont know about quality, but a suggestion would be to pick up an extra filter from one of the stores and then try sears or something like that. I would suspect that you would have luck getting one from autozone or discount auto for cheap and have no problem with them. Its not like you are going to need a Mac quality tool for this application, you use almost no force and even the cheapest one will last for more years than you will own your truck.
Needless to say, always put a coating of oil on the gasket on the new filter before you install it. This makes is easier to remove. Also, make sure the old gasket comes off with the old filter when you remove it. If you end up with a double gasket situation, you are in for a mess. Been there and done it!!
Is anyone spinning the filter on/off on a '97 or similar Explorer with a 5.0? Only about an inch of the filter sticks out past a sharp guard that will cut your hand if you try to spin it. I like doing my filters by hand, but I haven't been able to on my 5.0 Explorer.
I have an 88 Mazda B2200 - I wanted to change the filter, but the previous installer used a torque bar or something to install it. The filter is also very small in diameter so the filter tool that I have does not fit.
I will use a large screwdriver to remove it, when I buy new OEM filters from Mazda.
I only changed the oil on this go around, but a hand tightened filter will go on next time.
