Just bought a 1992 Explorer 4 door 4x4. It has the touch button 4x4 and auto hubs. the engine has just been rebuilt from top to bottom and bored 30 over. the trans has been overhauled as well. it also has a new radiator, brakes, tires, exhaust from manifolds to tip. it has great power and acceleration. the only complaint i have at all about it is that while at idle it has a slight lope like its searching for the right idle rpm. it has the factory tach and its idle around 750 with a 100 rpm swing up and down from that. other than that all it needs is some shocks and front sway bar mounts. and though im not a fan of the touch button 4x4, it has locked in 4 hi and 4 lo every time i have hit the button so far. i have only run 1 full tank of fuel out and average 18.9 mpg. is this good, fair, or avarage for the 4.0? it is auto and has 3.27 gears. the only thing i have to compare it to is the 86 ranger with 2.9L 4x4 with 3.73 gears that gets 20 mpg but its stick shift. anything else i should be aware of with the gen 1 explorer?
If I remember correctly, my '93 had the same pulsing idle, and there was a cap that had come off the vacuum manifold on the plenum near the firewall. It should have 3 ports I believe, and one of them is supposed to be capped.
My wife had the transmission controller replaced right before we met in '01, but it has run fine since. I noticed that if I run in D around town (under 50mph) the tranny doesn't seem to hunt gears as often.
I am sorry to say that I never paid attention to the gas mileage as my wife usually drove it. My '99 Ranger usually gets 17mpg in the city or on the highway, but it has the 4.10's.
Both of my 4.0's have had small problems with the thermostat, so I would recommend trying to keep the coolant serviced as recommended. Other than that, very reliable and trouble-free!!
thanks for the reply, ill check all the vacume lines this weekend. being it hasnt been that long ago the engine was redone, it would be easy to have left a line off. also goint to be putting new shocks on @ all four corners.
Yes, the vacuum tree is a good place to check for leaks. Also, consider cleaning/replacing the IAC. Other weak points on the Gen I arethe trans (sounds like that has already been rebuilt) and the radius arm bushings. There are many posts on this forum about the IAC and radius arm bushings.
