I am just wondering if anyone has put a 4.o in a F1. Iam thinking of doing it and I really havn't heard of anyone Putting a ford V6 in our old trucks. I,m not sure of the trans that I would use but am thinking of an automatic with overdrive. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
i really cant see it posing to much of a problem other than all the electronics required . most modern 4 poppers make more power and torque than my flatty so i think it'd pull her around with a good deal of pep . i havent seen one here i can recall but i beleive it was fomoko who's got a buddy who put a newer 4 popper in one , and mech has a mercedes deisel in his , all sorts of crazy stuff including the oh so common and boring s.b.c.
What I Was Thinking of was a 4 liter V6 from a Ranger. I am driving the Ranger now but the body is in pretty ruff shape so I'm thinking of puting the engine in my '51. Thanks for the input this a great site.
yep i knew which one you were talking about . the only problem i have had with those v-6 fords outside of the original 2.9 is that they seem to like to pop head gaskets and eat theirselves up in the process . had two of the 3.8's and i wouldnt wish one of 'em on my worst enemy !! put some pics up and especially once ya start the swap .!!!!! we like pics here !!!!!!!!!!!
I thought of doing this to. I have a Ranger V6 and IM seeing them get 200.000 miles.
Ours has 160.000+
I also seen kits where you drop a 5.0 in the Ranger haha.
I bet it would run great in an F1.

I apolgize in being in the wrong forum for these questions but thought that maybe you have had some 4.0 experience. If it is offensive to others please PM me.
I had a 2.9 stick originally in my 90 ranger extended cab 4WD that either took out a head gasket or cracked a head. IMHO it was gutless, had 160,000 miles on it so I never dug into the engine, instead I found a 60,000 mile 4.0 automatic and I swapped out the entire engine/trans/computer/all forward harnesses, etc, etc. I ran the truck up to 240,000 with no further issues. I have not personnally had a 4.0 engine problem. Were the head gasket problems in the early or now the late 4.0? A second question: Are the 2.9's and the 4.0 the same block?
My current daily is a 2003 4.0 extended 4wd Ranger. I do not see any issue with the amount of power in the 4.0 since my Ranger weighs more than my 49 F-1.
Someone here is putting a V-6 from a Taurus SHO in his truck. Has turned it 90* (originally mounted crosswise in the FWD T.) and adapted a RWD tranny.
Yes the 3.8's had some serious problems, I have an imaculate '94 T. sitting in my backyard with it's second set of blown head gaskets.
weird i never had an issue with the early 2.9's . had a couple in pinto's mustang 2's and an 85 ranger . never any problems other than normal wear items . the 3.8 and the 4.0's i've had obvious problems with and my buddy tj has had several issues with 4.0 in his wifes explorer . might just be us ... who knows !!! how is it not the right forum sanford's wanting to put one in his f-1 so it's definetley relevant . as far as power i agree it should pull the ol' girl quite well , probably get decent economy to boot . p.s old green i took said 85 ranger long bed and used a kit sold by total performance i think it was , and put a stock 429 out of a parts 70 tbird i had for my 70 .... it was fun !!!!!!!!! till i ate the diff !!!!!!!

I know of a newer Ranger 2.3/5 speed in a F1 and Kelly, the owner/builder was satisfied with the results and the fuel mileage. I don`t know any more but I`ll try to get in touch with him for more details.
I was kind of thinkin about a swap like this myself? Only I was goin to use the whole truck (frame and all) I was wonderin how much power the 4.0 V6's have and how well they run? When did they come out? I'd love to find a 2wd 4.0 5speed rollover or similar to use for a "donor" There's a local junkyard that I get my parts from. He's keepin an eye out for me one. Keep us posted !!
This is what Kelly did, he bought a wrecked Ranger that gave him most of the needed parts. The 2.3 was a decent enough mover when I went for a ride in it cross town and he used it to commute 35 miles daily to work.
staying carbed, one could put a 2.8 v6 from an 80's ranger or Bro. II in it. Going EFI, IMO, I'd go with a 4.0 over the 2.9 anyday. That said, earlier 90's Tbirds had a 3.8 supercharged v6 (supercoupe), and there's always the 2.3T that someone a while back had wanted to put in his truck. Electronics and emissions will be the major piece of work. A bit off topic, but what I'd like to see is a VW TDI (that in the cars, gets 50+ mpg) in one, and see how it goes. I wouldn't do it myself, unless it works, lol.
truxx i got a cousin who has a 4wd explorer that just ate either the tranny or rear diff . i can ask paulie about it as he said something about parting it , if he hasn't already scrapped it . he drove it daily with no issues till now .... i beleive it was a 4.0 ....
