I wouldn't recommend the 2.3L as they just aren't powerful enough. Our old work shop truck (88 Ranger 2.3L 5spd) had absolutely no power, to keep 60 mph many times you had to keep the pedal to the floor. Plus if you make the engine work you can watch the fuel gauge go down. My friends 94 Ranger 2.3L 5spd is exactly the same way. Our new 2004 Ranger 4.0L 5spd work truck is way nice truck to drive than the old 88.
I have a '96 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 and 4 speed O/D transmission bought new and now has 130,000 plus. Never had any engine (or transmission) problems whatsoever. Still gets 22 mpg or better on long trips and will smoke the tires easily if you punch it too hard. This is my wife's daily driver and she says she NEVER wants another vehicle. Just replace what's broke (I Love this woman!) That leaves me more money to put on the '54. I wouldn't hesitate to use this combo in one of our trucks. Hope this helps. Steve
Thanks for all the information, this site has so much info that my questions are usualy answered just by reading the threads. At this time the swap is just a thought but it does sound promising. thanks again.
There are two different 4.0 liter engines. The overhead valve one, rated at 160 HP I think. pretty reliable if you stick with the later (95 up) models. Then there is the 4.0 SOHC. VERY reliable, rated at 210 HP. They really run good. If I were going to swap to a 4.0 I would do the SOHC. For the same amount of effort you get better gas mileage and a lot more power. SOHCs were produced from 1997 to current model year in Explorers, some Rangers and the '05 up Mustangs.

My 2003 Ranger 4WD extended cab is a 4.0 SOHC Automatic. It has good power. I occasionally tow about 4500# with it. I previously towed with my wifes 95 Lincoln Town Car. That was a very good tow vehicle. The Ranger is not as good as the Lincoln but OK. I am building Willard to take over the towing chores.
The 4.0 I have has 237,000 miles on it in a 94 Ranger 4x4. It just now needs valve cover gaskets. thats the only thing thats ever gone wrong with it. I also have a 95 ford van with a 351 in it. I'm going to put them both up for sale and see which one sells first, the other one gets to be a donor. Thanks again for all the helpful info.
