i am dropping a v-8 in placs of an inline 6 and have found two
canidates, but this is my first ford and would like a little help
one is a 351W out of a 69 galaxy, what is the diff between a W and a
C 351. I also came across a 400,not sure from what.Are there diff
400's like 351's wich could i get more power from cheaper, thanks
The 351W would be the easiest swap. Putting a 400 in will require changing the bellhousing or transmission while the 351W will bolt right up to the existing transmission.
What you must remember, is that the 351C is DEVELOPMENT of the Windsor, designed to take full advantage of the head design used on the boss 302 engines. Keeping this in mind, it would follow that the 351C is a better all-round motor than the 351W, but apparently in the US clevo parts are expensive, so this might be a limiting factor.
There are monster port factory heads (4v) for the cleveland, but for the windsor you must spend significant amounts on head work/new alloy heads for similar performance.

There really was only one version of the 400 with slight variances in compression ratio, none very high. If you want seat-of-the-pants low end toque, go with the 400. It will be a little more challenging and pricey finding parts - but more rewarding. I'd go with Australian heads - and have them fitted with large valves. This will really pep it up - better flow and compression ratio will go to about 10:1 if you have a 1973 or later 400. If it is an earlier one the compression will be a bit higher but should still be no more than 10.7:1.
If you are after performance, there are certainly more parts for the 351W which will drive the cost down - but for decent air flow the heads will require massaging, driving the price up. With the 400 you will need to swap the transmission as well, and possibly the tranny mounts and driveshaft.
I'd go with the 400, but then again this is the Cleveland Forum and that's why we're here! If you go with the Aussie heads, plan on spending up to $800 by the time you get them reworked.
now a days the windsor is the cheaper way to go. if you want to be different, go with the 351c. if you dont mind some sork, go with the 351m/400. as stated you will change the tranny as well.
