Transmission Swap Idea

I took my transmission to be rebuilt for my 59' last week and found out that 2nd gear was MIA and they didn't have a source to get replacement parts. This is the 3-speed on the column out of a sedan that allows me to run a 1 piece driveshaft. They found that the later model 3 speeds would fit the bolt pattern on my bellhousing. They found a 3 speed out of a 63' t-bird that has the same bolt pattern, linkage, is the same leingth, has the same output shaft, and it has syncro's. The only difference is the input shaft diameter and they said I could just replace the throwout bearing and the clutch disk with the later model and it would work.

Does this sound right?

No problem getting the earlier 3-sp gears (post-'51), they are on eBay and available from a number of vendors. I wouldn't think they changed after '52? Do you mean the cluster gear is toast (single forging with 4 gears on one shaft)? Or the second gear on the mainshaft? I probably have the one on the mainshaft, I'll have to check. Do a search on eBay.

It's really pretty rare for 2nd to be a problem, either on the mainshaft or the countershaft, since they are constantly engaged. Did it eat a chunk of metal or something?

I'm having a shop do it and they just said that the 2nd gear was eaten alive by something and they tried all their suppliers and couldn't find a replacement. They can just get bearings and seals for these old transmissions. By the way, this is the only shop that would try to do an old 3-speed in Spokane County. I called 25 transmission shops before them.

It looks to have been run dry of oil completely. When I went to change it I got about an ounce of sludge and a lot of metal shavings. Right now they are building me this other transmission out of 3 others and the only thing that worries me now is the clutch because I'm changing it from the 1 3/8" to a 1 1/16" input shaft size.

I guess I'll just have to find out tomorrow if the new pressure plate will fit and if I can use a different type of throwout bearing that it came with. The original was on a sleeve and this one clips to the fork. I think it should work but I'll just have to find out.

It sounds to me like a solid plan, I think it will work fine.

Nevermind on the swap. It isn't going to work out in the end.

Where can you find replacement parts for a transmission that is this old? I've been looking around and can't find anything.

Thanks for the help guys

Since you're changing out trannies can you use a T-5 or the O/D of a '87 and up Ford pickup transmission? If you're changing why not go for the most modern possible? Just a thought.

I can't afford the adapters. I'm on a really tight budget right now and need to get it on the road because my driver just blew its differential.
