I have had a whole list of issues with mine. That doesn't mean that the one you are looking at is the same way. Just check it VERY THOROUGHLY, don't leave any stone unturned. When they are working good they are a great car to drive and ride in. Good Luck with your purchase.
well guess what I bought it after checking it out real good, thought I did all my home work... but no .... as I backed into my driveway the trans had a long delay in reverse and then slammed into gear, sounded like the bottom of the thing was on the ground.... I came in and did some pocking around online and found this....
it's going back tomorrow for a full refund... I hope...
I'm going to the dealer to have a chat with the service mgr and get them to print me out an Oasis. In the mood my wife's been in lately I don't need this headache, IF that's what it turns out to be. I need to drive this thing and "stretch its' legs" a little without her catching on, I only drove it for @ 3 mi. on the test drive the other night, to see how it acts. In the link for the tranny problems it seemed there were WAY more problems with the V-6 auto. As I understand it with the V-8 I have the 4r100( ? ) Does this tranny seem to hold up better than the V-6 trans or did I mis-read?
I went in loaded with a audio recorder.... got the whole thing recorded.... They stopped the lone and the paperwork and are trying to get me into something else.... the more a drive it the more I like it.... the problem with mine seems more like the traction control than the trans.... the trans goes right into gear nice.... but it seems as soon as you spin one tire the traction control kicks in with a slam and a bunch of noise.... I want nothing to do with it.... problem is we are driving it while they find us something else and we love it... it's loaded with all the goodies... and they can't find us anything even close to it for the same money.... they got a 2005 with 7600 miles on it, it's a XLS.... more money less goodies less mileage...
Yeah, she REALLY likes it, and we traded an 06 LR3 in on it. I just don't need any problems with the Explorer right now with everything else that's happened in the last few months. I'll go visit the dealer today while she's at work and get some more info. Hopefully this thing won't add to all the recent headaches!

The 02' up Explorers do NOT have the 4R100. The 4.6l explorers have a 5spd tranny in them just like the 4.0l V6 versions. My grandfather has a 4.6l Explorer and it has the 5spd auto. My 04' F-250 SD has the 4R100 transmission in it. The 4R100 is too big to fit into an Explorer.
Explorers have had junk auto transmissions in them since they came out in the early 90's.
If you look at buying one get the extended warrenty and romp it hard on the test drive. Work it good and pay attention the best you can for any odd noises, vibrations or clunks.
