We are considering selling our Tahoe and getting an Excursion. The main reasoning is for space. While we only have two young kids, when we have family in town picking them up from the airport is a hassle as their isn't enough luggage space with the 3rd row seats in the Tahoe.
Not sure why you'd trade an '07 Tahoe (new body style) for a discontinued, gasser Excursion. You'll take a bath on the trade in value. Probably $8-10K or more. If you have cargo space issue once in a while when family comes in to town, get a roof rack/box. Problem solved for about $600-800, or less.
If your real reason is that you want to get a trailer that the Tahoe (towing capacity up to 7,200#) won't handle, just make that the decision criteria. Don't pretend that with two kids and the occasional out of town visitor, you need "more space." That's just silly.
I have a 9' wide garage door. That puts the opening around 100-104" and the X can go in with tow mirrors out (but not in the tow position) leaving about 1 inch clearance on each one. Most of the time I do it without pulling in a mirror but always pulled one in for the first 6 months before getting brave. The mirrors are close to a foot wide so the 79" make sense without mirrors although they add a couple inches even folded in. I would say it would be tight if you have an 8 foot door and only pull in one mirror, about the same as me with both out and a 9 foot door.
Do your research. I bought one for similar reasons, 03 eddie bauer, 7.3 diesel. Love the size & power but have been very dissapointed with its drivablity. It wanders all over the road & have not been able to fix it. Has gone through lots of front end parts & has a clunk that no one has been able to fix yet either. You can read my post "wandering & clunking" for details, posted it a few days ago. Both seem to be very common problems in excursions with no solid remedies. Problems are pretty annoying, not sure if the positives outway the negatives in my book. I would drive as many as you can as far as you can before buying. If you got one without the above problems it would be a real score.
Thanks Weekendwarrior! Hmmmm...... this may create some issues, I'll need to go remeasure the garage entrance. For some reason 89" rings a bell to me as for the clearance I have. With the Tahoe I just pull in the drivers mirror upon entrance and exit and have plenty of clearance to get in and out of the garage. Thanks for the info!
tractorrick, those are easier problems to fix. 1. Sway bar. 2. Tighten the steering pump. 3. swap out stock springs to 250/350 springs
Are you talking about upgrading the front sway bar or adding a rear one? also by "tigten the steering pump" are you talking about the steering gearbox itself? I have read several posts on this site that the sway bay adding and/or upgrading helps body roll but not tracking, whats your take on it? Is changing the springs with it the key?
So I just remeasured the garage door width and I have just south of 93" inches of width clearance. (what the heck was I thinking when I bought this house a year ago!!)
With the drivers side mirror pulled in do you think I can gain greater than 5" (off the 97" width)
TIA for the info, this is much better than me having to drive one home and trying to fit it in the garage only to find out I don't stand a chance.
With both mirrors pulled in I would venture to say that you can clear the garage. Your garage in tiny. I guess I don't have any room to talk though. Width isn't my problem... height is!!! I would rip off my roof rack if I tried to pull mine in

Hmmmm........that might be a deal breaker. What a pain to have to get out and pull in mirrors each tme I leave the house! The garage is nice but goofy. It's a 3 car garage with 30' depth but has 3 individual carriage doors. When we bought it I remembered to measure the depth but hadn't thought of the narrow openings.
