My dad has a '89 with the 2.9 (I think thats what it is). Last wednesday he came home from work with this wierd clicking noise coming from the underside. it almost sounds like a metal tag geting hit with something. it'll do it real lightly just idleing, and you can hear it on the road, but it really starts to make a racket when you gun it or let it bog down when you take off. It's not real constant, but it's always there. Any Ideas?
My dad just worked on his engine sounds like the same problem he had. When we took it apart we foud a bent rod (two different directions)and broken piston. He was fortunate nothing as far as the engine block was damaged. Looking to start it up some time this week.
I hope it isn't anything like a dead piston or something of the likes, but I think my dad has decided to just tear it down and rebuild it. thanks for helpin out.
Found out what the noise was. The starter doesn't use a solenoid to engage it onto the flywheel, instead syntrifical force is used. The spring to keep the little gear on the starter back away from the flywheel had broke, allowing the gear to bounce around.
We had to laugh when we found this a few weeks ago. If not for having to take the starter off when pulling the motor we probubly never would have found it.
