Crossmember Modification

Hi

I have my T5 mounted on my 52 engine, the old crossmember is cut and I need to fabricate a new one, I would appreciate some pictures showing your designs. My engine is stock flathead and my transmission is a S10. I will update my gallery with. some new pictures

Thanks

If you end up removing the stock transmission crossmember you need to replace it with not just a support for the transmission but also a crossmember or other structure that resists twist in the frame rails like the original crossmember did. To observe this effect step on the running board with and then without the crossmember. I retained the stock crossmember moving it back about a foot and then installed one of the available transmission crosmembers to support the trans.

Thanks, I have figured that out already. When I was cutting my crossmember I noticed the movement in the frame rails and put a temporary 2X2 brace in. I am going to keep part of the original and try to reconnect and stiffen it under the transmission and also add a new one at the transmission mounting point.

Thanks, that is exactly what i am looking for, I can cut, weld and grind but sometimes my design capabilities aren't what they should be.

John ,thank's for dreaming up that crossmember,If I didnn't already have one,..I'd use it..alot of nice elements in it's design, and it's fairly simple in construction..I may just toss mine and build your's anyway.LoL..
cts1954..you can't go wrong with that one!..for what it's worth, I'd use it in a heartbeat.

I'm running T5, so my tranny crossmember is several inches to the rear of the stock crossmember. The tranny xmember is similar to the one in Johns gallery, using 1 1/2 square tubing. The stock xmember was flame cut about six inches from the frame on both sides by the po. I squared up the ends, boxed the ends, and fabbed another xmember to connect what was left. Since my tranny xmember bolts to the bottom rail of the frame, there was still lots of flex when stepping on the running board. The stock xmember fastens to the top and bottom rails, and stops the flexing. Yes, I do have two xmembers within six inches of each other.

You have done the smart thing, the whole design of the F-1 frames depends on a crossmember that anchors everything in three planes, at that location. Everything else on the frame and body moves and twists relative to that area.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to get back under my 51F1 and reinforce my crossmember. I cut it out 2 years ago when I installed the S-10 T5 trans. In the cold mornings the brake and clutch pedals have started dragging (hanging up) against the floor boards. Also the emergency brake mount on top of the right half of the crossmember has caused metal to bend.
