new here, I am searching the internet for descriptions on this old large Ford truck I spotted in Rotterdam. However, I have no idea what make or model, hadn't even picked it for a Ford. Luckily, to start my search, the Dutch Motoring Department gave it a 'Ford G 39 T', with a first registration in 1955...
I want to post it on my site (along with some more pictures I took of it), I have a car spotting website and this is exactly the car that proves that interesting cars are driving everywhere! For all you Ford Truck lovers, my site isn't that interesting, I only have a Ranger online, and some Mustangs but we can't call those trucks now can we ;-) But... in order to post this big beast I need to know a bit about it, the proper make for starters. It looks to me like it has been something like an ambulance or the like?
It looks like an early to mid '50 Thames or Fordson truck. Autolit.com posts sales literature for this kind of truck on a regular basis on eBay. You can try their site or do a Google search.
There is a picture of it in James K. Wagner's book Ford Trucks Since 1905. It's a German Ford made by Ford-Werke AG. The one in the book is a 1951 model. He calls it a Tonner BB Spezial model. Obviously this one, going by the cross over the windscreen, was an ambulance.
I have some truck identification book I picked up at a bookstore in the middle of nowhere..It had basically every Ford truck, and I remember this model very clearly!
The darn book is nowhere to be found! Truckdog already did a fine job identifying it, but my book had a ton more info on it. I'll be sure to post the info if I find it.
Hmm, never checked here again, I only got a email alert on the first reply. Oh well, anyway... I will be posting all my pictures of this truck on my website tonight (as in: within 6 hours of this posting), as soon as I have photoshopped them to size, etc.
Ehm, well, oke, thought that that would have been quite obvious from my nickname, anyway the pictures are online on www.carsofcoolhaven.nl , enjoy! And all help on what car it is, is still appreciated of course!
we're too lazy to spell it out, we be much happier just clicking on links, lol.
Hahaha indeed. Deleted my initial remarks, let's not offend people on forums you don't frequent ;-) One lesson learned over the years: when holding a very nice single malt, do not post controversial remarks on the internet ;-)
Slightly back on-topic: I hope the additional pictures are appreciated and perhaps make the identification conclusive. For now, let's call it a Tonner BB Spezial. I must say I am a bit amazed that neither searching on Ford G 39 T and Tonner BB Spezial I end up on some site with similar trucks. In most cases, searching the 'industrial code' (like E9 for BMW instead of 3.0 CS) leads to good websites with tons of information. Here, so far, nothing...
Let's see if I can clarify. On my first post I said that this is called a Tonner. On closer reading I don't think that's part of the name, just a weight rating. So I'll post here the picture from Wagner's book, the text that goes with the picture, and a picture that I found of a similar '52 on Google. There's a bunch of great old European truck shots at this site. The web site for the picture is: http://www.chrishodgephotos.co.uk/pagecma/truckphotoslist1.htm.
Have you seen this eBay listing? It's a sales brochure for your 52 German Ford. Bigger model, but same truck. Four more days on the listing. Ebay #220233254593. Enjoy. Stu
