The weight of the fifthwheel you are looking at seems high, are you sure that is not the GVWR. The Pull Rite hitch is very expensive, but most likely the best hitch out there. The auto slide is great, but think about if you have a break down and need to move it. Your truck or one with the same hitch is all that will move your fifthwheel. It will work great for what you want to do.

To me its always good to have overkill for the hitch. It really surprised me that fifthwheel hitches are rated so low, and in order to get a higher rating you have to pay through the nose! My F150 has a standard gooseneck hitch in it, nothing special, actually the cheapest I could find. Its rated for 30k That's way more than even I would suggest for overkill. I like your original idea... an 18k hitch for a 14k gross weight trailer seems very smart to me.

The best looking set up is the B&W gooseneck hitch with the 5th wheel companion hitch. And with it you don't have a big hitch sitting in your truck, the 5th wheel adapter just pulls out of the gooseneck. http://www.topratedadventures.com/Mf...lerHitches.htm

There are several different hitches out there. As long as you stay with a name brand hitch (Reese,Pullrite,B&W) you should be okay.As Grafekie Put it ....In this case bigger is better.Be sure and get a double pivot hitch when you purchase .they make a lot of difference while towing and especially if you have to hook up or drop your trailer in a uneven place..Hitches are just like anything else.If you pay cheap price then you,e got a cheap hitch. There is usually some good deals on ebay ,but the expense of shipping a hitch is outrages.I lucked up and bought my 15,000 pound Reese on ebay for $108 dollars, the hitch had been used once. The bad part was I had to drive nearly 300 miles to get it.The hitxh retailed are here for $899.so i felt i come out okay.

Ive got the superglide & love it. dont worry about using other vehicles as the adapter plate comes off in about 10 minutes, just about 10 bolts hold it on. the only real disadvantages are price of course (got mine on e-bay good deal) & the fact that you have to back into it pretty straight on. if you do get one just keep the rails greased well with white lithium grease & youll be good to go.

You may want to stay away from the B&W. It is not a slider. I believe you posted you truck was a short bed. The camper may hit the cab of the truck.

I am thinking about the superglide, why do you have to back in straight.

The B&W I have is a GOOSENECK, not a fifthwheel...

It doesn't have a slider, and I've never had any problem (all my trucks are short beds). I always get a kick out of fifthwheel folk who can't drive without sliders :P

My airbags are Aire-Knots... or something like that. The orignal Firestones I had blew out after 10k miles when they rubbed holes in themselves on the gooseneck's hitch bolts. The new system is semi-automatic, with an onboard compressor and one switch. I love it! The mount points are different from the Firestones, which a) makes the Air-Knots not lift as much as the Firestones and b) makes the Firestone's rub out and the Air-Knots not. Hopefully they'll last a LOT longer!

Proper installation of that adapter plate has 4-1"welds to assist in holding it on. The bolts would probably hold it OK, but if something should happen and it was not properly installed insurance may not cover it.

I think this all depends on how the hitch is installed and how you setup the companion. I have this setup and personally really like it. But even with a long bed, if you get stupid, you sure enough could make contact between the cab and trailer. I think it boils down to paying attention to what you are doing, doesn't matter what type of hitch or trailer.

The capture plate does not require welding unless the plate is larger than the pinbox it`s getting attached to, even then you only need to weld some angle to the sides if needed or the front knee braces if needed or some flanges on the back if needed & then bolt it to the added material. mine didnt require any welding as the capture plate fit correctly.
