explain this to me. i been looking to buy another truck, and more than likely it will come from 500-1000 miles away since there is no good trucks in my area. if i could see the trucks in person, i could easily identify what tranny/gears,axles it has...but since im looking on the internet im going by crappy pictures and vague information that the owners have told me. how do i tell for %100 what tranny/gears/axles/motor/ a truck has, without actually seeing it myself?
side note: i found a decent 1979 f250 4x4 that looks good. i know it was original 300ci 6cylinder, with 4 speed. is there a chance this truck will have the heavier duty front axle D60, 435 np, 205 np ???? i ran the VIN but it says nothing about the axles, trans, or t-case. i need to know %100 what trans, axles, t-case this truck has.....and the owner has no mechanical ability, so he doesnt have a clue, and im 1000 miles away. how do i figure this out????
where on the door tag does it say what front axle the truck has?? i ran the VIN but it doesnt tell me what i want to know. the owner said something about 7,600 GVW or something like that. does this mean its some sort of a lighter duty f250 with the 300ci engine?? my 1978 f250 said 8,400 GVW
Anyway in the lower panel of the door tag the first three numbers are the wheelbase, the next, color, then type/gvw, then body, TRANS and the last three on the top line will be axles.
For the above example,
Results for VIN#: F10YKA27901
Model Year: 76
Series: F100 - 4x2 Pickup
Engine: 8 Cyl, 360ci, 2bbl
Assembly Plant: Kansas City
Transmission: The only information provided is Automatic. My guess is C6
Front Axle: w/P.S.
Rear Axle: 3.00 3300lb Ford

ok ill get all the numbers from the tag. one question, when i asked the dude for the VIN, he said something like A24 for the axle code on the door tag. maybe i didnt hear him correct but does A24 sound like a correct number??
Very doubtful that the front axle is a D60. They only came in 79 F350 4x4s and F250 snow fighter edition, and since the original plant is San Jose, than very, very, doubtful. That truck will/should have a D44 Front axle.

after looking at that decoder, i think you might be right. the "A" doesnt specify what axle it is but if it were the heavier duty one, most likely the code would be "D" or "I", which says 4,500lb
