Thats basically a revision number. Some parts get changed frequently, others go years without being updated. My '85s original motor is a D9 ('79) casting number.
It's likely that D1 and D3 were just the most recent revisions when that motor was built...
It can only be either a 370/429/460, someone might chime in with a way to tell. I don't know how to tell beisdes bore and stroke...
D1VE-6015-AB is the bare block casting number for a 429/460 raw (unfinished) block used from 1971 thru midyear 1979.
Midyear 1979 and later 460's: D9TE-6015-AB
Casting numbers cannot be translated to actual Ford part numbers.
Your D1VE block could be a 429, it could be a 460.
Measure the stroke: A 429 is 3.69" / A 460 is 3.85"
The same cylinder heads (actual Ford part number: D4VZ-6049-C) were used on both 429/460's 1973/74 (460's thru 1978 on passenger cars / Thru 4/1/1985 on trucks).
well i dont think i am going to tear it down far enough to measure the stroke. just freshen it up a little and drop it in
All you need to do to measure the stroke is remove one spark plug, drivers side front. Insert a wooden dowel with the piston all the way down. Measure...that's it.
If the engine came from a Lincoln Town Car or Continental Mark III, IV or V (1968/78), it's a 460. Lincoln's didn't use 429's.
