I have a regular cab v-10 but want a supercab short bed now, I found one I love 04 with 33,000 miles but it is a 5.4 motor. Is there a real big difference in the motors. What if I put 4.30 gears in it would that help. I only pull my 3500 pound jeep 10 times a year.
Well its hard to say i hear good and bad about the 5.4l in a superduty im sure it would tow your jeep with the right gears 4.10 or 4.30 take it for a spin and see for yourself my 2 cents
I have both--F-350 w/a V-10,and F-250 w/5.4(both super cabs). I have no problem pulling my 21 ft. travel trailer w/the F-250--loaded w/gear and family. The gas mileage w/ the 5.4 is better to boot. I'd say you would have no probs pulling your toy to the "playground".
My uncle has one with a ZF-5, and I know that thing wouldn't have any problems pulling your jeep. I think the GVWR is 9000lbs, so there shouldn't be any issues with it.

There is a difference that is for sure, but for 3500lbs + tow trailer...it shouldn't be a problem. The big issues...are the gears. What gears does your SD V10 have? What gears does the '04 SD 5.4L have? If the '04 has 3.73, then YES...you will need to re-gear to min of 4.30 (might as well due to cost). Also...will you keep the stock LT265 tires on the '04? If you want larger tires...count that against the '04.
You will need more time with the O/D off when towing with the 5.4L, but it will do the job.
I had a 05 V10 auto 4.10's and now have a 06 5.4 6 speed 4.10's.
There is a difference but I think the 5.4 does a good job and it does get a few MPG more. I tow a 8000# camper and I just go a little slower up the hills.
I have a 04 5.4 with 3.73 gears cc and I tow a 30 foot flat bed with 10,000 lbs and it gets the job done. Yes, it is a little slower getting the job done than a V10 or PSD but it gets it done. That is 3 times the amount of weight you are towing and I do it with 295 tires 33's.
3500lbs 10 times a year is no sweat.
No reason to switch gears either, it will just hurt your milage the other 95% of the time you aren't pulling.
i like my 5.4 03 f350 sc sb i'm constantly towing home new jeeps and older trucks. i have a big tex 12 gn gooseneck. 25' and i never had any issues towing it the 3:73's aren't my favorite gear of choice but until i get some dough to upgrade to 4:10's i gotta pay the price. a little rough on gas towing a full load. all in all i'm pleased with my sd. you should have no problems at all
Do you still get better mileage if you switch to 4.10s or 4.30s?? My advice is to hold out for the truck you WANT. You may not *need* the V10 or PSD, but sometimes that's not what matters. I wanted a PSD, so I held out until I found the right one.....FOR ME. Granted, a PSD is probably overkill x5 for what your wanting to pull, but the mileage both unloaded and loaded is better than both gassers (ESPECIALLY loaded!). But efficiency something think about when you're looking at $4.00 per gallon gas/diesel prices.
