I have searched and searched with no luck, so I am going to start a new post.
Recently my Superduty developed an annoying clacking noise when I hit railroad tracks or anything that makes the rear suspension vibrate at low speeds. It sounds like metal on metal coming from the rear of the cab or under it. Initially I thought it was coming from inside the cab, but everything is tight.
I have crawled under the truck and tried to determine where the rattle is coming from. Swar bars, drive lines, exhaust and spare tire doesn't seem to be the issue. Cross members are tight.
i had this same issue on my f150 could never find the problem, than purchased my f250 superduty and it was on it also turned out to be my hitch. i have a pintle combo hitch and it rattled at low speeds only. hope this helps.
Hitch, exhaust, shocks, spare tire, leaf springs, bumper. Lots of possibilities. Can you duplicate the noise by jumping up and down on the back bumper? Have you tried shaking everything you can get your hands on?
Not sure what type front suspension you have, but if you have leaf springs, look and you'll see there should be a plastic button or spacer between the leafs(the largest ones), if it comes out, or wears out, you'll get the clack sound. Also, if you have a trailer hitch that is not tight you'll get the same clack. Good luck noises can be transmitted along ways thru the body, driveline, etc.
1. Removed my rapid hitch...no change.
2. Exhaust flexes at the rubbber hangers. Looks normal.
3. Jumping on bumber doesn't duplicate the sound.
4. I have been under the truck four time for 10-15 minutes trying to move everything. Everything is tight with the exception of the exhaust.
5. Purchased Bilsteins today from shockwarehouse. Can't hurt I guess.
Man - I'm at a loss. Hope the shocks do the trick.
I has the same "problem" in my 2007, and it was the sound of my trailer hitch bouncing in the receiver. I was using the oversized hitch for leveling bars, sway bars, etc, the one that weighs about 30lbs...good luck.
sounds simple, but after tightening and spraying everything I could think might rattle, with no results, I discovered an ice scraper in the plastic tray behind my rear seat. Oh well....mine's fixed, good luck
Checking springs and sway bars can be difficult. Have you visually inspected the springs real close to look for any hairline cracks? This is sometimes easier with a bunch of weight in the bed. Have you tried spraying down the springs & sway bar with a lubricant to see if that helps?
Do you have a turnover ball type gooseneck hitch where the upside down ball is hitting your sway bar?
