Here's a brief history on the truck, 1996 F350 psd, 4x4 dump truck. 71,500 mi Got the truck a few months ago when origional owner couldn't get it to shift after replacing oil pan. Came to find out that they decided to change the slave cyl while the engine was out...just becasue it was "easier" than with the engine in...
I tried bleeding etc, finally ended up swapping out the origonal DMF clutch setup with a SMF Luk. Clutch engages good but I've never been able to get into 2nd gear (unless below 10 mph) w/out grinding. I have a feeling they took the synchro out....While the tranny was out we changed the fluid....looked like tar...put in the expensive for synthetic that's called for...
Anyhow to get back to the question While plowing snow yesterday I got hung up..had to have the 05 6.0 pull me out... I'm noticing a noise at highway speeds now. Not really a growl or whine...but kind of a low mix that goes away when the clutch is depressed. Any ideas or am I just going nuts
1st of all is there any noise at idle clutch in and out
you say the noise goes away when you push the clutch in this is only at hyway speeds? with it in gear or in nuetral what about 4th since its direct drive
give us alittle more detail as to when it makes the noise
I'm going to have to take it out for a spin to make sure. I fired it up today to raise the dump bed (get the water out before it freezes) and the throw out bearing has a slight noise that goes away as soon as the clutch is touched, even 1/8 inch. I did not hear the noise that I heard the other day. But I didn't drive it any, chance of snow Friday night so I can say better Saturday morning..
From what I remeber I only noticed the noise while at highway speeds, and went away as soon as the clutch was pushed. Didn't try putting it in neutral while moving. Noticed it in 4th and 5th.
Regarding the 1-2 shift, ive got this same tranny, and you have to remember the ratio is really different. so trying to shift from 1-2 like any other shift, means there is a lot of synchro wear on 2 because you put pressure on the synchro and have to drag the engine speed down, often below idle. If you do use 1st, rev it up above 3500 rpm before you go to shift, and let the engine drop to 1000 before you try to get into 2nd. If it's cold out, just start in 2nd, or wind 1st up and go straight to 3rd.

I've tried running hard in 1st, but it geared so low you can't get any speed. On the flat a 1-3 is possible if empty, but with any grade at all it falls flat on it's face The last time I pulled across the scales I was around 9000 light weight. I'm hoping that after I get the exhaust brake wired in it will help with the engine speed and hopefully shift a little smoother.
