So I have searched and read through many threads from other people whos temp gauge is running between the N and O. Mine has been that way since I got it a few months ago. So today I decided to change the termostat and the coolant temp sensor.
So I removed the old thermostat and attempted to put the new one in and my Y housing snapped appart. Bought a new one and installed everything.
Cranked the truck up and let it run for a bout 10 minutes and the gauge did not move but just up to the C. I got in and drove it about 5 miles and it got up to the N and never went any higher.
The thermostat is a 192 which is what it is suppsed to be.
Any ideas how to get this thing up around the M like it is supposed to be?
replace the coolant temp switch, it is like three bucks. it is different than the ect sensor. it will have one wire going to it. dont know where its at on a 300 though.
WoW.. do we EVER need a sticky for this issue. The dash gauge sensor is a little dime sized thing on the drivers side lower intake near the front on V8's. As stated it's a single wire deal with a stud on the top that the wire pushes on over.
the temp gauge in my truck doesnt work either, i replaced the sender in the intake already and before that i put another ect sensor in before i realized it wasn't even for the gauge only the computer, do the gauges ever mess up or would it probably just be a burnt or shorted out wire?
The temperature gage sensor on the 300 engine should be on the passenger side of the cylinder head near #6 spark plug. There should be one wire connected to it. It has been a while since I last worked on the 300 engine and I know that some of the real experts could give a better description of the exact location.

Yes the gauges can go bad, I had to replace a tach in my truck because it went wacky and would jump all over the place. The good news is that these gauges unplug from the cluster housing from the front, all you got to do is acquire a spare dash cluster for the same year vehicle, remove the clear lense and swap the individual modules.
I do have a manual that normally sits on the floor next to my chair at home. The problem is that I have been laying flooring for 2 weeks and the house is destroyed and I have no idea where my wife put it.
It's right under the #6 exhaust port. You can get to it either by pulling the starter or by reaching under the intake manifold. It's not fun to reach, I wish they would have put it on top of the engine like the V8's.
Also, the temp is fine if it's between the N and the O. In my experience, M is too high. If you're really in doubt, then install an aftermarket gauge so you'll know exactly what the temp is. Then there's no doubt.
