hey carb gurus, i got an '83 F150, 351w... i had planned to mod it a little but a baby on the way says i have to watch my toy fund a little better. i want to rebuild the carb thats on there instead of putting a new holley on it for now. is the rebuild something that a mild backyard mechanic can do on the kitchen table??
question #2, i have an edelbrock air gap intake...any point in putting that on there with the stock carb on top??
Rebuilding the carb is definitely doable. If you played with model airplanes as a kid then it's for you.
As for an Edelbrock air intake with a stock 2 barrel carb on it; I'm sure you'll see some gain but the carb will choke it such that you might not see too much. Not worth the trouble IMO, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it if you want.
For the 450 CFM - polishing the venturis and throttle bores would impede the flow of air less, hence a higher CFM. I personally am a little skeptical of that high of a jump considering that is 50-100 CFM higher than a stock carb, but if he says he got it then he got it. That site is a really good resource on Ford 2-barrels.
thanks a pile for your reply! i'm not sure how to polish all that stuff, i'll have to find a local guy to help me maybe. i'll put the intake on there anyway as i already have it, and i do plan on putting a higher CFM on it later but i want to start off with building this 2150. i'm new to this carb stuff, not new to the truck scene...
oh yeah man...carb rebuilding is a walk in the park....when i did my first one it took me a while bec. you have to be very clean and organized when taking parts out and puttin em back in. just take your time and you'll do just fine....it's cheaper anyway.
