Choosing a distributor/electronic ignition question.

Hey Guys,

I was looking for some advice on what parts you have experience with and possibly a direction for me to go in. I have a 1955 Ford with a 1968 460 motor. About 2 years ago when I had a shop doing some work on the motor they installed a pertronix electronic ignition. It seemed like a bulky setup but I did notice a difference.

My truck has been sitting on and off for about a year while I was doing suspension stuff, body and working on my other car and career to boot. The car won't start and my mechanic said the distributor needs to be replaced. I was curious which distributor/electronic ignition setup might be best. MSD?Pertronix?etc... thanks for any tips and info.

JoE

IMO you can't beat the MSD, however the stock Ford electronic has the same pickup and stator as the MSD. The stock Ford unit with a MSD 6 box is a great combo for street or dally driving.

X2 on that. I had an MSD 6T box on my 460 and the damn thing went to poo on me after 4 months. That was an expensive lesson that told me that the Dura Spark II ignition was just fine with me.

Thanks!

I was thinking of something like this... It's Ebay Item number 300203073135. I've been looking around to see what other options might be good.

Thanks again!

I would go with the factory duraspark before the procomp stuff.

I just ordered one of these. I just couldn't beat the price of $55 shipped. He said it was a pro-comp 6004. I'll let you know how it looks.

I put an MSD pro billet dizzy and MSD 6A on my 80 and haven't had a bit of trouble out of any of it. It's straight MSD i didn't use the durapsark for the signal like some guys do

From what I hear it's a two wire hookup. One to 12v the other to the tach.

joe go to ebay look under ford 460 or ford distributers and get the hei unit for about $50.00 to $100.00 i installed one last year on my 78 460 and what a differnce i was also able to eliminate all the factory wireing/coil/brain box ect with 1 wire hookup its easy to install into any thing one thing i found wont work is an after market water neck for the thermostat as there is a clearance issue to deal with just be sure to find the 12 volt on start from your ignition switch i could look 1 day and advise what wire is is for shur
