I have a new to me 2004 F-350 6.0 that has just started running rough. Loss of power and stumbles bad. It happened when the truck was at operating temperature and driving. It progressively got worse through the day as I drove it, to the point where full throttle would not move the truck.
Any ideas on what to check or look at? I am trying to avoid the dealership for money reasons. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Best armchair diagnosis would be an ICP (Injection Control Pressure sensor) or IPR (Injection control Pressure Regulator) valve. These have both caused the symptoms you are describing. Any evidence of excessive smoke? If it was smoking like a freightrain you may have a stuck EGR.
Sadly no, the ICP and IPR tests are all performed with a scan tool (IDS or similar). You could maybe run down to Autozone and have them pull the codes for you and see if you have any DTCs. Many DTCs do not set your CEL so there's a possibility you may see something.
Have a look at the 6.0 Bible in the tech folder, it has DTCs, component locations etc. It's a very helpful document.
The ICP on your truck should be on the passenger side valve cover towards the front of the engine (this is different on the 2004 MY up engines). The IPR is on the drivers side basically right underneath the up-pipe. It's a bit of a PITA to get to.
The engine harness issue usually requires replacement of the harness because it is chafed.
Almost certainly ICP or IPR then.... One other possibility: clogged fuel filters.
I think the ICP/IPR is good guess, to be such little parts they sure can cause big problems.....the harness has been a problem on some of the 03/04's, but it was all due to chaffing, I'd give it a good visual inspection. You didn't mention how many miles you have on the truck if it's under 100,000 the sensors will be covered under warranty with a $100 deductible.
