I have never believed in re-using gaskets but today someone told me it was OK to re-use the metal gasket that sits in the valley of a cleveland and seperates the heads and intake. What do you all think?

Personally I'd never reuse a gasket. New ones don't cost that much.

Some rebuild sets, or head sets don't come with the metal valley gasket but they do come with the intake gaskets. The trick here is to trim the metal valley gasket so it will not interfere with the intake gaskets, clean it up, and re-use the valley part. The valley pan keeps hot oil off the bottom of the intake. Check the manifold fit and drill a hole if necessary to drain any trapped oil back into the valley.

Anyway, that is what I intend to do with my 400 engine. I won't be getting anywhere near 800HP. I will probably be getting closer to 1200<not>-hehe

Shazam, That raises the question of how to seal a Cleveland. I take it that you are a proponent of the factory pan type of gasket. Do you use any sealant around the ports? If so, what type? I made the mistake of using the cork type material gaskets along with some sealant suggested by the parts dealer - and now I suspect I will need to redo it due to leaks. Any other tips in getting a good seal would be appreciated.

Use Fel-Pro "Printoseal" composition gaskets dry. I can't imagine using cork gaskets on my intake to head surface. For the end seals I use rubber with weatherstrip adhesive on the bottom side and a little grease on the top side. I use a little Permatex "Aviation Form-a-Gasket" at the joint line.

Some guys use silicone on the end seals if the end gaskets don't fit right because of head/deck milling. Check your port alignment also.

My $.02 worth
