we have an older "green tag" auto trans out of an early cougar / mustang 302ci. in a 48 ford pu, we just purchased. When in low ( 1 ) gear, its like a tractor in first. and moter wound up pretty tight at 60 mph. We have not figured out gear ratio as yet but, 411s come to mind. what would be a better gear ratio for the rear 373s or 308s or some thing in between? Need more top end, don't need to pack a lunch to go 50 miles. Don't need low gear to high either. Got any suggestions for this old 3 spd auto? Also, what is a "green Tag" trans and how can I find out exactly what this thing came out of? I suspect this is a late '60's early '70's. Thanks for any help.
Not sure what a green tag is, but I think I can help. Are you running the stock rearend in your pickup? I'm assuming you've got a 289 or 302 in front of the trans.
I had a 68 Cougar with a 302 C4 trans combo, and a 3.00:1 rear. It wasn't bad for gas mileage, but acceleration stank, especially in second gear. I'd recommend going with a 3.55 rear for a good toss up between speed and mileage with that trans. I've had tons of cars with 302's, and they really wake up with good gears behind them.
thanks Joe, yea I know it's a C4 but never heard of a Green Tag, the guy at the trans shop told me that. Thanks for the info. Have fun and stay between the lines.
The guy at the tranny shop may be referring to an older Ford reman unit. They had a green tag on them. Just a guess.
It could be a Ford "Authorized Remanufacturer" tag...but if the transmission is painted green, red or blue, it was rebuilt by Aamco, or someone else.
1948/50 F1 rear axle ratios: 3.73-1 / 3.92-1 / 4.11-1 / 4.27-1
Look on your truck's Rating Plate located inside the glove box door.
Back in those days, instead of the usual axle codes used later, the actual rear axle ratio is stamped on the plate.
I think I can shed a little light on this...maybe.
I 'm pretty sure what we're talking about is a green dot C4. It's kind of a split range auto deal, when you're in D you're actually starting in 2nd, it was a winter driving mode. If you click down to the green dot on the original column the tranny came out of, it does the normal 1-2-3 shift.
